Salad Days discussion
I just read through this manga again, for the nth time, focusing on the YxF stories. And I still think it's the best high school romance manga of all. UNBEATABLE. I'm so incredibly grateful to pinoyotaku for scanlating the entire series by himself.
For those who don't know: Salad Days is an 18-volume anthology of short stories focusing on all aspects of love and romance, mainly centered around high school students. It starts off as individual love stories, but some of the characters continue to make repeat appearances, and there's a final couple which the series follows a lot near the end that also provides the grand finale. Fairytale endings, heartbreaking angst, forbidden love, forgotten love, love unrequited, love from afar, gradual love, childhood love, destined love, self-sacrificial love, love that overcomes, love that fails, and love that never as a chance to bloom... Salad Days tells it all.
So... anyone else read this series? Which are your favourite dishes (stories)? What did you think of the YxF pairing? And any favourite couples besides those two?
It has been a while since I read Salad Days but I do agree it is one of the greatest of mangas. It and Living Room pretty much are my favorite romance mangas ever.
Its been too long to remember any specific couples, so I'll just give the recommendation for anyone who hasn't read it. Read it because you are an empty shell without it!
i just finished reading it and...some parts of it really was quite touching...YxF forever haha...but the last chapter most of all...the timeskip...just made me realize i'm getting older haha...i mean i know it's a manga but wow it jsut feels like they've experienced so much even though they're only older then me by a few years..haha
Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it? I really liked the ending, especially how the phrase "Salad Days" was used - I finally understood the significance of it for the first time. (It's just like "Flame of Recca"... you only understand the meaning of the title at the end of the series.)
Which was your favourite stories? For some reason, I enjoyed the chapter where Futaba had to watch Yuuki dating that younger girl. It just serves her right, after agreeing to that painting thing. I also liked the one about the couple that had to travel back by train to retrieve the love letter that was buried. The one about catching the baseball as a sign of love was great too. Oh, and the one where the guy filmed everyone for the school festival before leaving. And the one where he plays their song at the wedding of the girl he liked. Oh, and the one about the rock musician who couldn't tell his girlfriend was cool. And the one where the guy walked under the umbrella with the little girl. And the shinigami who fell in love with the pianist. Oh, and the love adviser who finally got one for himself. Oh, and the one about the two young kids who go into the tunnel.
*end of Salad Days otaku rant*
YxF will be married next year!
EDIT: I just realised... the first volume of Salad Days is actually pretty boring. It's only from the second volume onwards that you get some good stories. Maybe that's why a lot of people get put off.
Sorry for the necro, but I've been waiting nearly two years just to mention this:
Yuuki and Futaba are getting married this month (April 2008). Congratulations to them. :) This truly marks the end date of Salad Days.
(Hmm... guess it's time to re-read this series again, and remember why it's my favourite romance manga of all time.)
I didn't read the thread. avoiding spoilers.
I'm up to chapter 17 and I like the whole separate stories and some of them are starting to connect one by one. At first it feels like I'm reading Adachi's Short Program but as some of the stories seems to be connected to each other. It's a bit different.
okay 140+ chapters to go! ^^
Me too, I've read the manga for god knows how many times and I never get tired of it. Definitely not something to miss if you're a fan of any type of romantic stories. My favorite dishes would be Volume 9's "Caterpillar Girl" and that story with the shinigami in it. I also like the one with the main guy having been confessed on by his best friend's prospect.
All in all, I like the whole manga. You can feel the emotions oozing out every time a dish reaches its climax. One of the most powerful romance pieces out there, if not the most.
Which one was the one about the main guy being confessed on by his best friend's prospect again? There are quite a few similar stories to that, from what I remember. I also liked the one about the two brothers who fought over their cousin with kendo. That was cool... and you never really know whether the girl likes the younger brother or not..
I think you've described it perfectly... it's one of the most powerful romance pieces, because it shows all aspects of young love, not just one or a few like the majority of romance manga out there.
