I'd say Rurouni Kenshin is much, much better than One Piece.
guys u dont know Eiichiro Oda (arthor of one piece) is Nobuhiro Watsuki's (arthor of ruronni kenshin) apprentice along with Hiroyuki Takei (arthor of shaman king)
Actually I did because of this post:

Rurouni Kenshin was better than One Piece because the characters were better developed, especially in the case of the villains. In RK everybody they fight there's an actual reason for it besides just wanting to go be heroes or whatever, while in One Piece the villains often seem to just be there for the sake of being there.
Uryuu freaky, pale and geeky,
how do your powers grow?
"With gloves and scars and silver stars
and swords that I shoot from a bow,
yes, swords that I shoot from a bow."
there are no more reason for the villains in Kenshin than in One Piece ...???..
They are just bad guys that have had the misfortune to encounter the heroes ^^"...
i thought one piece anime was ok, the 4kids dub was horrible clearly, but the original japanese one was good with a few(but not all) fillers i could live without
and as for the villains in rk, i like the villains, but i thought some of them was too hyped and then turned out to be wimps, of course then again in rk, kenshin and saito was supposed to be really strong, so it makes sense that the villains are wimps compared to them. I guess that's part of why I like OP better, even though I like rk, I generally prefer a story where the main character grows in strength. Oh and also, although some of the villains in OP seems like they're there 'just because.' I think that's more due to the fact that op's setting is more adventure and rk is more like the main character has to defend something, if you have to defend something then each villain needs some sort of reason for attacking you. While with op since it's an adventure, villains can attack the main character just because they're evil and he happened to meet them(bad luck for the villains if they piss off the mugiwaras really =p ) or the main character could be attacking villains for some purpose

Kenshin fought to protect the weak, and that's all... the villain had a grudge against him, but kenshin wouldn't care and really fought them to protect his ideals and friens.
In OP, they fight to protect their friends too, along with all the weaklings that are oppressed by the local villain ^^" ... so it's not THAT different
and no, they don't fight just because they are pirates.... (they are not even real pirates to begin with )
in conclusion, i agree that the world in OP is less self centered than the one in Kenshin
... but i don't think it is something bad, to say the least ^^
