    Default Gintama

Gintama is a series which definitely has a place in my top five favorite anime and manga series. In fact, it's third after Rurouni Kenshin and Prince of Tennis. It's such a cracky take on the Meiji Restoration and the Meiji Era that I can't help but love it, especially since I'm a huge fan of Bakumatsu history.

The series is parody heavy, so I suppose it's kind of hard to understand if someone doesn't know much about the Japanese culture, but the parodies are what I love. Gintoki, Hijikata, Okita, Yamazaki, and Katsura are probably my top favorites, though Gintoki is my favorite. I love his addiction to Shounen Jump and parfait.

I'm just wonderin' if anybody else reads the manga or watches the anime, and what you think of it. <3

I read and watch this, and have little doubt as to its place in my heart. it's just freakin' amazing! can get a bit wordy at times, which slows my brain down from all the sugary antics.... well, sugary, as sugary as you can get with a sweet loving yet glycosuria suffering main character.

Can't beat the shinsengumi for laughs either

I also love Gintama's rendition of the Shinsengumi; by far the most hilarious and original I've seen. I couldn't tell you which of the Shinsengumi members from this series was my favorite. I do love the ridiculously long and weird episode titles too.

By the way, indiana, I love your signature. Especially the "kintama" part of it, which makes me laugh.

I always have trouble with the shinsengumi names, but hopefully having the viz copy on hand in future will help out with remembering

They probably will when the graphic novels are released, because I know Viz usually lists the characters at the very beginning of their graphic novels. I only remember the Shinsengumi names because I'm a fan of the historical Shinsengumi as well, but there are so many members that it's quite easy to mix them up!

Just seen the picture of the first volumes cover on amazon. It's official, this is the first serialised 'advanced' line manga!

July can't come soon enough (and viz have definitely stuck to seperating 'silver' and 'soul')

So it's coming out soon? Sweet! I don't know if I can wait until July, though; but at least it's running in the magazine so that should tie me over, in addition to the anime.

I'm thinking Viz might license the anime eventually as well, since they hold the rights to the manga already. I kind of see the anime as being a DVD only release, but who knows?

It could be likely, i hear gin tama is going down a storm in japan, and the fansubbers help solve the japanese references with notes at the top as the jokes are said, viz could do the same.

I didn't think it was so popular, but then I haven't searched Google for Japanese-related sites yet to be able to see. If it is extremely popular, then the better chance it has of becoming licensed. I think it would definitely be in Viz's best interest to add the liner notes like the fansubbers did.

I've seen a few cosplays from Gintama. Gintoki seems very, very popular XD

not extremely popular, but for a shonen jump anime series it is one of the most popular of the moment (the big three beating it of course)
