mm, read the first 6 volumes awhile back. downloaded and read everything else in the last few days. some thoughts:

    - i wish they expanded more on that guy who recognized guts. like.. who was he back then? and it would've been nice if everyone found out about guts' past.

    - it probably isn't a coincidence that all those nobles were left alive after the attack. they'll probably become enamoured with griffith when he comes to "save" them.

    - what would it take to kill the God Hand anyway? Guts already stabbed one with his dragon slayer.

    - what is skull knight's objective ?

mm, i guess that's all for now. does anyone have a copy of cooler's post on berserk (the really long and explanatory one) ?

That was Owen. He was in the Golden Age arc, always observing things in the background. He was there when Griffith faked his death, for example.

I'm really looking forward to the group finding out about Guts's past. I'm thinking it'll happen on the boat.

Naturally. He's going to become king, after all.

It takes a lot. Skull Knight's sword might be able to do it.

    Vengeance, it seems.

It's buried in the Nuke thread. I'll try to find it now.

Alright! Rather than editing my previous post, I'm making this its own post, for obvious reasons.

Here's the "giant post" I made before the nuke. It took me a while to find this in the nuke thread...I had to sift through five pages of posts matching my name and the keyword "berserk".

We know Causality is a spiral, not a circle. Similar events will happen, but it won't all necessarily be the same. We know that Emperor Gaiseric (I misspelled that, methinks) once ruled over a huge empire. He wore a skull helmet, and was incredibly powerful. We pretty much know that he is Skull Knight.

Now, remember Griffith's rescue from the Tower? An old folk tale was told, about the fall of the old Empire. In a single night, five angels came and destroyed it because of Gaiseric's hubris. We were later told by Mozgus that a "wise man" or "magician" (depending on your translation) had been imprisoned by Gaiseric, and he had cried out...and his prayers were answered by four angels. Anyways, after the "five angels" line is said, one of the other characters says, "But I thought there were four...".

This "night of destruction" happened about a thousand years ago...in other words, the time of an Eclipse. To be precise, the Eclipse that created the oldest God Hand we know...Void.

But the story says there were four.

The Wise Man, of course, became Void. I'm certain that he spread misinformation and general lies about Gaiseric, leading to Gaiseric's reputation as an arrogant ruler. Remember, Flora told SK as he went to battle the Apostles, "Just once, I wanted to see your shy, smiling face again". I'm fairly sure that history has misrepresented Gaiseric.

Anyways, back to the story. At the time of Void's ascension, there were four existing God Hand members. He was the fifth. We know that Void sacrificed the capital city of the empire, or at least a portion of it. We've seen the remains of the sacrifices. We basically know Skull Knight is branded, as he has told Guts before that "we share the same curse". I'd assume that Void branded Gaiseric, among others. Now, somehow or another, Gaiseric escaped the Eclipse. How did he escape? Probably in the same way that Guts and Casca did.

Causality is a spiral. Logic would suggest that the Skull Knight is not the first of his kind. We know not what form this creature would have taken, but something must have saved Gaiseric, playing the same role that Gaiseric would later play for Guts.

So Gaiseric goes on a quest to kill Void after being rescued. Somewhere along the line, he obtains the Berserker armor...or maybe he already had it. What we do know is (a) the four God Hand members prior to Void must have died within the next two centuries or so, and that (b) somewhere along the line, Gaiseric was destroyed by the Berserker armor and truly became the Skull Knight, probably with the help of Flora.

We know that the God Hand members died because Void is the leader of the present God Hand, implying that he is the oldest, and because the next Eclipse would have happened 216 years later, and there cannot be six fingers. So somewhere along the lines, the four were killed.

I submit that whatever saved Gaiseric/Skull Knight fought the God Hand members alongside Gaiseric. The creature died in the battle, and ultimately, so did Gaiseric. They took the four God Hand members with them, leaving Void the lone survivor.

Gaiseric's spirit was brought back, Flora retrieved the armor, and the Skull Knight assumed his current form.

Oh, and it's worth noting that, in the picture of Gaiseric we've seen, his horse has a female figure on it, just like the Skull Knight's.

Anyways, that's how I suspect it goes. We do not know how many of these "cycles" there have been...how many previous "Skull Knight" characters have existed (not that they would be anything like Skull Knight)...how many Strugglers there have been...or how similar their situations were.

I do suspect that Guts will break the spiral. He will break it because of his bond with Griffith. In the case of Void and Skull Knight, Void was a magician who was imprisoned by Gaiseric. They were mortal enemies. Guts and Griffith were the best of friends. Guts was the only person ever to make Griffith forget his dream. Their relationship will be the key to stopping the Spiral.

I predict that Griffith will have a change of heart, probably during a battle with Guts, and will turn against the God Hand.

That's all I'm going to say for now.
    That was it.

There's also this bit, which was in response to Cold-Nite:

    ====WARNING SPOILERS====
    Do NOT Read if you are not current with the Manga;

Ever since Schierke came along, we've had this change of pace in terms of monsters and encounters with non-human creatures and mythos. Sure we've had Puck all this time, and he's an elf, but during the arc in which Schierke was introduced, we had Trolls, Ogres, Kelpies and two witches along with another Elf. There was a heavy air of classic Fantasy in it all. Will this trend continue? The whole classic Fantasy feel came to a brutal end when the Apostles masquerading as the Band of the Hawk (BotH, heh, a curious acronym based joke/pun I make about Griffth and Gutts.) and killed Schierke's teacher. Since then, we've had no encounters with creatures from classical Fantasy and mythology, right?

If we continue to see some along the way, does that mean we might see, say like some Merfolk, while they're on the boat? Or like, a Leviathan or some other Benthic beast, such as a Kraken?

If it's as Cooler says, and they pass on showing the Party's journey by boat for the most part, in order to show Griffth's establishing of Falconia (which would mean he finally marries Charlotte, in order to become king officially), then I guess the answer is no.
    My reply:

After the fake Eclipse and the battle at the tower, we saw Griffith's side for a while. I believe the same thing happened after the big battle at Flora's home. It would make sense, given the pacing of Berserk, to shift focus after this battle.

One other thing: Keep in mind that Miura's mythological creatures are very different from the norm. His elves, for example, are nothing like the oft-accepted Tolkein elves, which are what most people think of when they hear "elf". The same goes for his trolls, etc.
That's it. Hopefully this thread will remain alive...I'd hate to have to find that post again.

These last two chapters are the product of 3 months work drawing random soldiers, they should be awesome.

Is it just me or are Griffith's apostles the only ones that merge with their equipment?

    Uryuu freaky, pale and geeky,
    how do your powers grow?

So any speculation on how the Griffith/Emperor confrontation will turn out?

I suspect that Ganshika will either be killed by Griffith or somehow subordinated.
