I wouldn't bet on that. I'm not quite sure it's been a while since I've heard it but the Japanese school system is something like the top 5 in the world. If you don't learn anything about the world after going through it you weren't paying attention.

But truthfully I could just be blowing it out my ass considering I have no first hand info on Japanese schooling.

Actually, I bet the Japanese don't know anything about the rest of the world - but then again, who does? I barely even know about any country outside Canada and the USA - and I know much more than most people I know...

But you could also argue that they have at least a basic understanding of the happenings in that country. If I were a writer I wouldn't write about a country I had no clue about. Since the U.S. is the most popular country in the world (most talked about at least for various reasons) they know the most about it. This is probably why in most of the Manga's I've read, when they go to a different country it is most likely the U.S. Even then you barely hear anything about it besides, hey I'm going to America won't see ya in a year bye bye.

I haven't read any that talked about or was set in Germany though. France has it's cooking so that's something worth mentioning. Like the person said before the Mid-East is probably off limits. Africa's just out there, so is South America. Canada's peculiar though, I guess some people just see it as boring. Not trying to bash on Canada at all though.

Bottom line though you hardly hear anything about the country the character goes to unless it's Japan.

    Man that's some good ramblin

I mean they usualy travel to america and we can usualy find (in some mangas/animes) characters, who have german name/surname. Or their family is from germany. Also in some magic spells in some animes the magic is said in german language. Examples (NGE= asuka is from germany, magic= fate stay night as i remember).

And about history dunno about you guys but in my country on history i must learn stuff like WW I and II each countries asia, wars, europe, america and european colonies in america, colonies in australia. And more stuff like that so basicaly i need to know that. Also on geography i need to learn stuff like countries and main towns in them also mountains and, oceans, rivers, and stuff like that from the whole world ...
So i need to know stuff like where is north south korea and their capitals or africa countries and their capitals ... man pain in the ass. Dunno what japanese learn in school but from animes we could say that ... japan language, some history of japan, english and other stuff.

That annoys me. I know.. There's probably a lot to know about the US... I mean, it's a baffling 230 years old.

    btw
Monster is set in germany. Hikaru no go and Ranma both visit China.

FMA is set in a different world, the anime travels to England at the very end and Germany in the movie.

Side note the movie shows the Beer Hall Pusch which is pretty cool considering you never see anything like that in anime or manga that is fantasy.

Though the world is different, it's full of parallels which suggest that Amestria is Nazi Germany.

Still, it's not actual germany. Except some small things it's all made up. Sure there are paralells, but not enough to give a germany feel.

I suppose it depends on how literally you take it; since the anime actually ends up in the real world and acknowledges its existence the similarities can be seen as more than random, but since the manga isn't doing anything like that, it's not clear cut.
