Thread: The story begins...

... where?

That is to say, how were you introduced to the awesomeness? Tell the epic story of the beginning of the end, or the götterdämmerung of non-fandom.

For me it began one dark night, spacing out in front of the computer. I had nothing to do and the future looked bleak. Oh, woe all the days of inactivity that had stained the last months of school, were as it was meant to be a place of free thought it instead had yielded to the unspeakable horrors of homework that plague us, the lazy ones.

But then, like thunder on a clear monday morning, an idea struck me. What if I would check what animes were currently airing, get a little colour on these so grey days, and get a good reason for not doing the unspeakable horrors of the aforementioned?

So I ventured forth, took my pride and dignity and threw them away, surfed through the nebulas of the interblaggs and arrived at the doors of the vaunted empire of Animenfo. There I searched, tedious and unyielding, even in the face of the odds, and I found two candidates; The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Welcome to the NHK.

As it were, both turned out to be amazing, both were based on literature, and both made me drool in anticipation of another episode. Which turned out on top? That is up to individual opinion, my dear friend.

Although I'd say NHK. Suck on that!

I don't even know what this has to do with the MSH topic, (might bebetter off in the general anime/manga section)

but if I had to judged based only on anime then I'd choose NHK

But if i include the novels I'd choose MSH, I haven't reed the NHK novel but there's like ONLY 1 volume so it's probably very similar if not exactly like the anime lol.. that's just my guess though.

Nah, the thread is meant to be a telling of the (epic) story of how you were introduced to MSH, nothing else. I'm just being vague.

ohok... to be honest I don't remember... I remember dowloading it from afk lol. That's pretty much it...

After finishing it I went to find the manga but couldn't find any translations of the manga that continued after the anime...

It was a while before I found baka-tsuki... I'm not sure how though. i think it was from this website... lol

I was sitting quietly at my desk, with nothing to do (which is most of my life, sitting quietly at my desk, with nothing to do xD), and I that motivational poster. The one of "A Truly Japanese Experience." in the crunchyroll forums...

Suddenly it struck me: When was the last time I watched a new anime? I've been watching my old favorites, and even achieving them, but there was never anything new...

What an idiot I was. I found MSH, and realized I've missed it for two years since it was released. So after looking at the watch, I decided I'll watch a couple of episodes...

Wow, did I overshoot that. I started with a couple, but soon found myself skipping to the previews to get the right order in. Then suddenly, I had spent the whole night, watching the series... It was beautiful...

And I wasn't able to go to college the next day, because I was sick, luckily, so was the teacher was as well, and our college doesn't have subs.

I learnt thereafter of the thread at Stop Tazmo, as well as the novels, which I've begun reading (masterful pieces of art they are).

My main reason I was drawn in was Haruhi herself. Her personality and style represented my years in grade school, when I was energetic, and always on the look out for things like aliens and people with magic powers (laugh all you want, I do believe in this stuff even today, though I don't run around since people would stare at me IRL).

Also, I realized how small I was in this world so large when I was young. My father often brought me to Britain at a young age, and we were in London when I asked him if this was where everyone lived.
He told me that London was but a small fraction of our world, and so many people lived in vastly different countries. I didn't think much on it, but I realized that many people might have been doing the same thing I was, and when I grew older, I realized it was more true than I thought.

Watching the series brought me back to my happier side, in a world so boring, there's nothing i enjoy more than reading and rewatching the series... And drawing the characters, writing my own fanfics (not released), etc...

@mal_ganus. Haruhi means a lot to all of us. You have won over my heart, comrade.

The affection I feel for MSH is much more ethereal. The attraction I feel is the absurdity, I don't like when everything is laid in front of me in easy to understand ways and when a story is told, that even when you understand it, just doesn't make sense it can be either annoying, or absolutely beautiful. That is what Haruhi taught me.

You took the words straight from my mouth. The ethereal feeling is something we all cherish as Haruhiists. Its a shame a lot of people don't get the feeling and often find themselves in the same world Kyon was before he met Haruhi.

I've been hearing about it for years, though I think I first encountered it through the series entry at TvTropes.

I saw Hare Hare dance on youtube while watching Loituma movies after watching OVER 9000...
