Back from the dead, I personally think the action is a good change. Here are my reasons:
1) Action was brought about at a good pace, not too fast, allowing a transition.
2) Transition allows the manga to become serious and move towards a proper ending.
3) Action is not brainless action, characters have respectable strengths that do not involve "hollow"/"nine-tails" ---> outside UNBELIEVABLE power.
4) I believe that this arc is also meant to raise Negi's level to finally match Fate.
5) We go ever closer to the truth about the war and Negi's mother (if Negi wins) and even if he dosent, he still needs to face Fate.
Although I do have to admit I prefer the Chao arc the best and most interesting...
it depends on Negi's credibility.. :)

Right now Fate has outwitted Negi by the whole fugitive thing as well as the fake-Asuna AND he is stronger. Negi beating Rakan (if it happens) will only be a testament of Negi's outstanding brilliance to plan ahead to match an overwelming opponent. Rakan on the other hand is a prime example of the typical powerful but idiotic shounen archetype (but thank god this series is NOT about him).
I'm interested to see how Negi will utilise his intellect to make up for his inferior power when finally fighting Fate. I'm less interested in bemoaning about the shounen power boast (as some would call it) he has been getting. Negi needs one anyway and that doesn't wane my interested. The other shounen mangas out there on the other hand......
I don't really mind the increasing amount of fighting, since it's handled much better than in almost all other shounens. What I do mind is the fact Negi surpassed all his friends so much it's no longer necesary for them to fight. At the beginning of this arc he was still weaker than Setsuna and Kaede, and now he's like 5x stronger than them. As he is now he'd defeat all of Ala Alba in mere seconds.
^ think it just seems that way. Because after this, negi wont really be able to use "raiten taisou" 1 and 2 against anyone else. It takes too much preparation, and he always needs someone to watch his back in order for him to cast it. It wouldn't work against fate.
And I wouldn't count Asuna out either, since she can cancel it.
What Iromaru is suggesting that once Negi activates raiten taishou, he could surpass the entire ala alba. I don't think Asuna could even cancel raiten taisou if he moves 150km/s...
Negi's immense strength growth, and perhaps surpassing ala alba, is understandable. Negi has every reason to become stronger than ala alba; there is Fate, chasing his father, protecting his comrades, info on his mom... etc...
^ that may be true, but imo MSN will become really boring if all the big fighting will be handled by Negi while girls just cheer for him from behind. It's not that I don't like Negi, he's one of the best male leads out there, but he's still far from being my fav Negima character. We already have a whole vol. worth of Negi vs Rakan fight so I hope the focus will turn to girls in the next chapters.
@tfs-san: The problem is: raiten taisou is a plan/armationem that is too Rakan centric to be of much use anywhere else. If he's fighting Fate, he'll probably be alone, and we know that Fate wouldn't give him the chance to use it. But otherwise yeah. Everyone needs a level up. Asuna is the only one who might get one through getting her memory back.
