welp.. Tosaka is teaching him (somewhat) the meaning of never giving up even in the face of a game breaker... by lecturing him while punching him....

It turn out that Negi was afraid of fighting Jack in the finals. Tosaka has taught Negi a very important lesson with his punch. Most of the flashbacks were Ako's from the start. Negi is having flashbacks as a way to stay focus on his agenda. Tosaka has play a very selfless role as a master trainer.

Only Negi's motivation will help him to overcome his fear of fighting Rakan, and win the fight. Even if Rakan win the tournament, Rakan has taught Negi some valuable lessons. One lesson which Rakan taught Negi is to not be afraid anything which gets in the way of his goals. Rakan did help Negi in a lot of ways by joining the tournament.

With this, it seems like Tosaka's blackmail and Ako's unrequited love for Nagi are somewhat resolved. Negi was kinda pathetic here, if I was in Tosaka's shoes I'd probably be mad at Negi too.

But... "Promise me you'll win" ? Even with him telling her earlier it's likely impossible at this point? And I bet it will motivate him to get up again... Guess they don't classify Negima as "shonen" for nothing.

well, judging by the battle so far.. Tosaka's teachings and lectures didn't do much

Tosaka's blackmail was a 2 chapter-old topic, while Ako's doomed crush on Nagi was a much older and more drawn out issue that was finally dealt with..

yeah, but Tosaka is a wimp.. now that he has leverage on Negi he punches him and throws around some big (but useless imo) words, if he hadn't found what he did about Negi he wouldn't have dared lift a finger or say a single word to him..

Aaargh most girls in Negima are annoying. T_T I'm expecting to see more of Asuna and Negi but it seems that it would take long before Asuna will be back to her old self again. I wonder how Negi would react.

There's no such thing as "her old self" anymore. Remember that Fate just totally mindfucked the fucking mind out of her with his memory-eraser-re-eraser thing. She's strong and all that, but Asuna's probably goin to have a major shift in personality after that.

@mist: Tosaka was only acting like a wimp before. He totally acknowledges Negi as a powerful fighter, but when he was actually pissed at Negi for his self-doubt, he was going 100%, which was why Negi asked if he was ever actually that strong in the first place. He wasn't using his leverage iirc but was just genuinely pissed off at him.

Well, technically, Asuna's recovered memories _are_ her old self. And the Asuna we knew is new self. Still, they shouldn't be too different. But old Asuna is probably less energetic and more gloomy.

that maybe true, but I still won't believe for instant that he would have dared raise a hand to Nagi if he didn't have blackmail worthy insurance backing him..

besides.. when Negi says he can't beat Rakan, he's just being logical not being pathetic or scared, he had already decided that he'll fight the battle even if he can't win.. I'd like to see Tosaka try his luck with someone (something?) like Rakan.. he'll instantly turn to pancake after something like this:

never even mind the energy blasts and the warship breakers..

Tosaka probably thinks like those Gurenn-Lagann people. "go beyond the impossible, face overwhelming odds without a plan".
But Negima just doesn't work that way. And especially Negi doesn't work this way. He "lacks idiocy" as Kotarou put it.
