Is it worth pointing out that things simply work one way or the other because Akamatsu makes them work that way, and any discussion of physics and the like is just a fan's attempt to explain it to themselves? The characters in Shrek don't appear to breath. I don't attribute that to odd biological set ups, I merely assume that the animation staff was to lazy or incompetent to remember such details.
