Default Negima! Del Rey US Versions

I love Negima! It's my all time favorite manga. As soon as the fan scans began I jumped on board and have loved every minute of it. I love the fan scans! But then Negima! was finally released in the US by Del Rey. All of the art is there! But ... Peter David and Kathleen O'Shea David have ruined the English translations. Have you read it?

They say about everything wrong. They push the pervertedness even further. Not everything makes sense as they have no clue what happens next as they just make up shit to say in it. But worst off all ... just via the text ... they completely changed Negi. He is not the same character.

Fan scan Negi blushes, is shy, doesn't understand everything, is a little clueless with girls, ect,. He is bold, not shy at all, knows everything about girls and sex, and is never clueless in the US manga. He is like a different character.

Chamo-kun was messed around as well. Asuna is made more perverted and at fault more. Also tons of scenes that were clever in the fans scans now make little sense at all in the US version.

Example: fan scan = I loved the scene where the girls had to take off all of their clothes to make the elevator work. Genius! In the US manga the scene doens't play out clever and they make out that Asuna is perverted and makes everyone strip for no reason.

Perverted things were handled perfectly in the fan scans. The US versions pushes them too far. Now it's like something is actually happening. People are getting touched directly in private parts instead of implied. Now they have like Negi getting hard and the girls are playing with it.

It just isn't the same. So I stopped at Volume 3 of the US manga. I want them for the art. But the translations make me want to scream. It has a million problems.

I have friends in Canada and they swear their versions read just like the fan scans. They were shocked about the US translations.

So has anyone else noticed this? Does it get any better or fixed as the series went along? Should I bother buying them at all? What are your thoughts on this? I am sad that people in the US didn't get to read the fan scan versions. To them the US version is Negima and what they think about it. The fan scans are so much better.

^ I wouldn't be so critical... I felt the same way about the two, it starts to tone down the perversion starting from book four, and start to fix the dialogue for characters. I read it in conjunction with the original Japanese and the fan scans, and even the fan scans cant get every little thing that the original has. I agree that the first three books are a bit...you know....

If you were a bit more patient with it you would be able to see a difference! ^__^ well...at least I did....

heard they changed translaters from books 4-6 and again from 7 to now. I could be off by a volume but whats important is the current translation feels nice.

I may not be as critical as some people, but I only see a few differences between the fan scans and the US published volumes. While I do admit the first few volumes were a little on the perverted side, I thought this was just the usual comedic ploys we always saw in Akamastu senseis work. Although Tokyo Pop did a decent job translating Love Hina, they could have done better but they were able to convey the story in a way that US readers that are not fluent in Japanese culture to know what was going on. Del Rey goes a step further and adds extras in the beginning by explaining honorifics and putting translation notes in the back of the book to explain Japanese terms and cultural refrences that most people are not familiar with. While Del Rey is not doing things to the standards of fans, they are making a better effort than most publishers, like Viz who completly butcher the Japanese language. Still there is one publisher I found that is keeping the language intact as possible is Yen Press which is doing Peach-Pits Zombie Loan. They are keeping all the sound effects as they should be read, and the foul language that is used by one of the main characters is left in place. Over all, it's a preference; I personally don't care much as long as I get what's going on with the story whether it's from the scanlations or the published volumes. SO long as the plot grabs my attention and the artwork is decent then I'll read it.

Because they're sealed at the store I couldn't check out further volumes. I may buy a few more now and see. Like I said, it's my favorite manga. I want to support it. But where I love the fan scans ... I just really didn't like the first three volumes of Del Rey's releases. Not just me but my brother and others I know in the US were also pissed at the translations. I've been wanting to buy them anyway just for the art and to own them. But I made myself re-read them to be sure a month ago and they pissed me off even more. So I gave up. But if they changed translators that would really help!

Believe me volumes 1-3 are pretty bad if you've already read the fan scans. I read them twice and they just pissed me off. It boggles the mind! The art is there! How could they screw it up so bad with just text? But they did. I hope the next volumes get better. If not I'll just stick to the fan scans. I've never had this happen before. I read the Love Hina fan scans and bought the real versoins and loved both. Both were good. The fan scans did have a bold line in there "I love you!" in the hospital scene. The real version merely said "I like you." That was about the only thing that bugged me a little.

But Negima volumes 1-3 no matter how you look at it or read them ... it's just not right. The whole "feeling" and "attitude" of Negima is not there and it's replaced in a rather ugly way. Mediocre even.

I love Negima and I've had some tell me they read 1 or 2 (Del Rey versions) and thought it wasn't any good. Almost boring. They liked that art. But weren't into it. That is so not good. So I direct them to the fan scans and sure enough they loved them. I wish they'd re-release volumes 1-3 with a new translation. I'd buy them.

I am going shopping this weekend and may pick up two or three and give them a shot.

Alrighty, just looked through the english Negima's. Vol 4 gets alittle better but that Ojou-sama early on killed it. Vol 5 gets a step better as they axed the adaptors Peter David and Kathleen O'Shea David and put it all on Douglas Varenas. Vol 6 they switched translators. We have the favorites of Tranlator Toshifumi Yoshida and Adapted by Trish Ledoux where it finally feels like Negima. Vol 15 they change adaptors to Ikoi Hiroe and it's still looking good.
