What was translated:

What I assume they meant:
"I see, just as you'd expect from that sadist. Coming so far in such a short time. What a hellish training that must have been...
You're not like your father. You're much more like Evangeline -- his complete opposite."

Of course I can't read japanese, so I'm wildly speculating. Plus I _really_ don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth -- much less insult the guys at AQS.

I think he's talking about magic power of Negi. Evangeline explained that people have "magic containers" inside them, and just with that, Negi reached that level already. Or maybe, he's talking about Eva's village.

I think that Rakan don't think that these methods are the right to make a level up, that's why it's repulsive (hellish).

If I remember the speech Eva made that you're referring to, she was referring to Negi and Konoka as being "large tanks of magical energy", the problem being how to harness that efficiently. So yeah, Rakan is probably referring to Negi's development under Eva's guidance as well. Though the sentence still feels all wrong the way it's translated, especially in this context.

That's a given. Even Negi said so in previous chapters, shaking violently just thinking about it. I was just thinking "brought up" was a poor choice of words, but it's a matter of tastes.

My diplomacy skills suck when I write in English. So the last few times I made comments on a translation I ended up 1) being ignored (in the best case) 2) being flamed.
Plus how do you tell a translator than his sentence "feels" wrong in the context ? Since I can't read japanese my argument that "it doesn't flow well in the story" is pretty thin. It just sounds like a negative critic, something no translator or proofreader likes (I should know, I did my share of trans and qc). So I just vented here instead of bothering them -- sorry.

By the way, the "Kyoumen Sukuna no Kami" on the black board? Most likely the top of the first letter was cropped, and it was the Great Demon God "Ryoumen Sukuna no Kami".

Yeah, In Japanese it was cropped too, so they left like this in translation.

And what I've explained is correct. Rakan just thinked that Eva's training was just to make his magic power even stronger and make he uses it well, nothing about Battle Methods and such... that's why it's repulsive(for him), but she even said that "she likes guys that grows strong by themself". She was one of the best Masters that Negi could possible have. Now Rakan will teach him the Battle part of Magic Swordman, with a forbbiden spell that Eva used in her past.
So, "being brought up with just a container" is just that Eva never teached to him any battle methods, just have made his magic container grow up and refined the efficiency of his spells/magics.

Yeah, I see your point, you wanted a more casual english in the sentence... But it's make perfect sense to me.

all she did was take his techinques and refine them, and now rakan is going to improve on that by teaching him magic swordsman tech? COOL!
