The land octopus-like creature is likely a herbivore. It likes to eat the clothing of travelers since most clothes are made of plant matter. The creature can't survive by only eating clothes of travelers.

It's not magic, it's physics; that amount of energy could not be contained in such a small, fleshy, easily expandible area. But I suppose since it's magic, physics doesn't apply. Sigh.

There's no physical law that prohibits you from containing a lot of energy in a finite space. You might need even more energy to keep it there, but it's not prohibited.
That's what is to be done for controlled nuclear fusion.
And you're right, in fantasy, normal physics don't apply much.

Yes, true, but it would be impractical to create an equal and opposite force in order to contain that huge amount of energy, not to mention incredibly difficult since it all has to be contained in the space of an arm.

Lulz. It seems that what i said sparked some kind of strange discussion. Actually, using so much energy to contain a massive amount of energy would be pretty cool. Imagine the point of release, its like a nuclear explosion. In fact, what would be dangerous, is not the amount of power put into the arm, but the release of that energy, kinda like shooting at cannister of compressed liquid oxygen. Or Like a Yamato Cannon!

In this case, the amount of energy in the arm would only be less than half of the maximum output of the person, since the rest must be used to contain the power itself in a relatively small space. And when this compressed energy is released, KABOOOOMMM!!!!!!

If something is free and available, people are going to take it. That's a fact of life, and no amount of guilt and blame will change that.
