I'm agreeing with sinker. Negi's mother dying in child birth (or at least so close that there is no real dirrenence for our purposes) is the most logical explaination. Negi never knowing his mom and only knowing that she is dead certainly could drive him to extremes searching for his remaining parent. Especially considering that Nagi is a living legend.
...If Negi's mother died at child birth, would it have killed Ken to included a chapter in which Negi takes a day off to pay respect to his dead mother or something? Something like losing the mother before even getting to know her is a very strong theme which could add to Negi's character yet Ken doesn't even touch on this issue.
"You are a 100 years too early to argue logically with ME......"
im not sure she would have died at child birth maybe shes just gone and no one ever thought about it .. now that i think about it maybe nagi just did it with some chick and then had negi and the mother died because during the war she was killed and then nagi took negi to go see uncle stan.im also not sure whether she is dead because im rereading negima now and in chapter 65 negi didnt know what dead meant meaning to say he has never had experience with someones death so his mother must be alive or negi has never ever ever wondered who his mom was.

Well, Ken neven mentioned the main character's mothers before either... Like Love Hina, Ground Defender Mao-Chan, or AI-Shiteru. (None of those Ken's Manga mentioned about a mother, they only mentioned the father at the very least). Except for the anime version since Ken not directly involved in the making.
West meet East? Here's Mother and Son:
We'll probably never even find out... He'll just never mention it...
Just how old is Nekane? I suppose there's a possibility that she is his mother...
Or maybe the Negi=Nagi theory turns out to be true.
Negi has a mom who died. It's mentioned a few times that his parents died, or his mom and dad died. (But then again, Nagi isn't dead.)
Negi being a clone of his father makes way more sense than Nekane being his mother, which isn't saying a lot, really. Personally, I just think Ken's lazy and/or forgot to go into details on that, or just doesn't give a flying fuck. In any case, Al mentioned that Nagi'd asked him to leave a message behind to his unborn son if anything happened to him, so unless he grew up in cloning vats or some shit, which I highly doubt, that basically means he's not a clone. But since chances are, this'll never really go anywhere and we might never know, I don't usually give it a thought.
Or maybe Ken just discriminates about not mentioning Negi's mom and just chose to describe his dad.
Just a theory anyway... *gets bashed by Akamatsu fans*
There is likely a clue to the identity of Negi's mother. There is the mysterious sixth member of the Crimson Wing. The member who is front of negi in the picture of the Crimson Wing in Ch. 129 seems to have a birth mark on his left cheek. The birth mark discloses the truth that the sixth member is not Fate. Even if Fate has white hair, he doesn't have the birth mark.
Oddly, Chao has what seem to be have two birth marks on her face. Chao's two marks on her are likely a result of makeup. Since Chao claims to be a descendent of Negi's, she was born with two birth marks. The sixth mystery member has a birth mark on his left cheek. The birth mark on the sixth member's face may be a result of makeup. Yet, the birth mark is likely sign that the sixth team member is a younger version of Negi's mother.
At the present time, we don't know the full identity of the sixth member. We do know that the young Takahata is with his master Gateau in the Ch. 129 picture of the Crimson Wing. Since the B.H.G. has shown up, it is likely that the sixth member will appear soon. If the sixth member is Negi's mother, she is likely alive and living somewhere in the Magic World.
