embarasing compliments
perhaps someone can give me a bit of insight into the situation in Vol 7, chapter 56, second to last page:
Makie, was feeling unconfident, but after showing neji her gymnastics routine, he says "it was a beautifully honest and direct performance, just like I expected from Makie-san", and Asuna, under her breath with jaw dropped and eyes narrow, and a bit of a blush says "I guess foreigners aren't embarrassed when complimenting someone"
This shocks me, since I remember practicing complimenting people in my Japanese classes a few years ago. I didn't learn anything that would imply compliments being embarrassing. What am I missing?
-
i guess it might imply that he likes her or maybe it has something to do with her flashing her panties around.
-
In Japan I think it's very embarrassing (for the person being complimented) to compliment somebody while they're present in the conversation. That's what I read, I'm not sure though.
-
well, I certainly remember it being a bit embarrassing to receive a compliment, since you seem to be fishing for them, by declining them three or more times, but I don't understand how it is awkward for the giver.
-
There is the fact that he lays on about 8 compliments...
I'm pretty sure that in Japan you kinda keep it to a two compliment max...
Well thats what I read into it...
Seeing as Asuna says something along those lines of that in the Actual manga I have at home, not that which I have got from here...
-
I don't know, compliments are embarrassing, even more so when you like someone.

If I remember correctly, Japanese people are known for their modesty. Try to google "Japanese Modesty" or something for more info. Anyways, you can find more info on Japanese etiquette at the link bellow.

Well one does have to realize that they are from two different cultures, the Japanese culture I am sure is much different form the Whales culture, so he is somewhat oblivious to the situation, himself.
-
I have two thoughts about this...
This could have nothing to do with the situation at all it could be the writer (Ken) expressing how oblivious Negi is supposed to be, being both younger than everyone and from a different culture. What I mean to say is that Ken wouldn't really think it to be an embarasing thing to do but It helps remind you of the characters personality...
But that's just one theroy...
My other thought is that personally saying at a younger age to someone older/more mature than me that there preformance was beautifully honest and direct might have made me a bit shy or embaresed...
Acctualy now that I've wrote that beautifully honest kinda sounds like a refrence to ones personality and that's a bit embarasing to talk about...
Oh well... Those are just my thoughts on the above...
