I've been reading the original Negima manga since it was first scanlated way back, and have to say that it's one of the best out there - Akamatsu Ken is, after all, one of the best mangakas out there.

Series 1 of the anime was a failure for a number of reasons, not restricted to but including: horrible artwork standards (major reworkings were called for by Akamatsu for the DVD release) and major diversions from the manga plot which were out of the Mangaka's hands.

However, Negima the franchise was (and still is) showing very big potential, which presumably led to the concept of Negima?!?!?! (however many ! and ? marks - meh).
This new branch was NOT created by Akamatsu Ken, but by other staff members (including the writing of the second 'alternative' manga).
Consequently, this series bears only the faintest resemblance to the original story - with the characters re-drawn by the team who made PaniPoni dash.

Basically everything outside of the original manga is poor by comparison and seems purely marketing-driven (for example the famous 'pactio' cards created for the manga have been multiplied by three for the new series because they were such big sellers).

It's all a little sad really, but at least the original manga continues and is still fantastic stuff.

I have the 8 volumes on paperback that are available in ireland (There's probably more available in america than here), and I vowed to myself that I would only read it on paperback so that I could enjoy it to it's fullest potential.

Edit: I just looked it up and as far as volume 16 has been released in america, though By the looks of it the people releasing it in england and ireland did a better job of translating it. Though I like everything they release because they always aim their translations at real fans of manga rather than trying to translate into a western equivilant.
