So I was rereading a section from one of the volumes, and I just realized that Mana might be in it, besides money, to get back kouki, the guy in her locket, by going back in time...
the others I am not sure of...just a thought...

Do not think about that of what you may face, only think about that of which is after it...do not allow reality to control yourself, free your mind, control, and bend reality as you see fit....
I don't think Mana would do that. Besides, she has the captain of the Biathlon that is in love with her and she knows that.
that wasn't the captain of the biatholon in the locket...that was mana's former partner

I seriously doubt it's the money. She even rejects her pay for her participation in Chao's tournament due to not wanting Negi to hate her for sullying her hands in it.
If she's using the financial gain from the plan as an excuse, then it makes sense that there are deeper goals in mind for Mana. She may not want to admit to the people who don't already know what happened to her in the past, so she's using money to hide her true intentions.

Well, i thought that when she refused the money as compensation for her 'performance' in the tournament she did it out of a sense of honor. She did say that she was fighting seriously so maybe her pride disaproves of accepting awards for failure. We can only assume she is masterless at the moment (perhaps not dead but missing) and, rather than fade into obscurity, maintains her own training that she might be able to serve as a pactio partner again. So she goes to do mercenary work for concrete rewards (money) which reflects her own capabilities (the best only gets the best, so to speak) as well as to purchase new 'tools' of her 'trade' (guns aside, how rich do you think she is to be able to afford to expend hundreds of 500 yen coins!!!).
I'd prefer this than have Mana as a money hording, cold blooded mercenary.
