Thread: would you still consider...

do you guys think negi is weak overall or one of the weakest? even though he was second in the battle tournanment he won by flukes exept for his battle against tekane. Actually i wanted to create negi vs. kotaro thread but people would just be biased say who they liked better but out of sheer curiosity say it anyway.

I don't think so, for his age his power is actually extremely impressive. now, I definately wouldn't be so absurd to say that he is some sort of god of combat or a master wizard or anything like that... but I think that this is the whole point, Negi may not be a superhero by our standards but he does manage to accomplish a lot through strategy and planning which is half of the battle. He is only 10, cut him some slack.

So we're seeing how he has grown physically and mentally. The Fighting Tournament has been his most recent obstacle, Negi certainly didn't get through the preliminaries by a fluke and although it wasn't his skill that got him to the finals we knew it had to be that way. Besides, when you look at most of the competitors in the Fighting Tournament the only three I think he wasn't a match for at all were Evangeline, Takamichi, and Alberio, the MAE4 would have also given him hell but they are specialists in their craft while Negi is more rounded in his training, he wouldn't have beaten Ku in a simple martial arts match up but with his magic he stood a chance and it was the same with the others. But think about it, all of them have an age and ability advantage. Takamichi and Alberio are at least 3-4 times Negi's age and certainly more experienced, and Eva is just in a different league entirely, but he did hold his own, even if he couldn't have won, it shows that he is by no means weak in body or mind.

That's how I see it at least.

Seems that Negi isn't a weakling, considering that he calls himself a "mage in training," hence he isn't a real mage yet.

actually i meant compared to other people in his class who specializes in fighting such as sesuna and kaede even kotaro. i know he can stand up to normal people but compared to the other people in his class, isn't he considered weak?

Setsuna and probably Kaede trained since they were very young, I think Kotaro did the same thing since he was an outcast in his early years ( I believe that it was mention in the manga at some point). Negi is new to real life battles, it's completely normal that he is considered weak. At one point in the manga, he say something like he knows a few battle spell (I think it was during the first battle with Eva in the early chapters of the manga). Also, he didn't graduated because of his fighting skills, he graduated because of his academic achievements.

True, true. They were only taught 2~3 battle spells (I think) at the Magic Academy, hence his other spells are self-taught.

Negi is a persistent mage and that's a factor to be strong! Perfect Practice makes Perfect! And he's strong in the inside and outside!

Yeah, there is a big difference between them. Negi trained in a classroom learning MAGIC, he came to Mahora with relatively little real world experience in magic and far less with combat. So to compare him to opponents who have been training in martial arts their entire lives is a little unfair.

Wouldn't the comparison you want to make be just like saying, 'Gee, aren't Konoka and Yue unskilled in magic compared to the Thousand Master?'

Considering the amount of time Negi has been training for combat I don't think he is weak, he isn't as skilled as the MAE4 or Evangeline but you can't compare someone who has been training formaybe 4 months to someone who has had hundreds of years to train and call it a fair comparison.

true true, but when he's in magic berserk....he is god. he even outdid setsuna without breaking a sweat.

Hey... I remember that Eva-chan considered Negi as a Giant Tanks of Magical Energy... So if he could unleash it... Then he will not be a weakling anymore!
