Thread: Series like Host Club?

So -- you've read all of Ouran Koukou Host Club and need something else to scratch that itch. What do you turn to?

My rec: BxB Brothers. My reaction to Host Club was "This is BxB only on crack." But possibly the way to think of it is that BxB Brothers is Host Club on crystal meth.

Any other suggestions?

I haven't read it myself, but my friend said Perfect Girl Evolution was similar to Ouran. I'm not sure how accurate that is.

It is, in a way - in the sense that humour takes priority and there's really no romance with the main character because she's not interested in that kind of thing. Overall, the stories are very different but they're still comedies.

Ouran slightly reminded me of Hana Yori Dango, except that one doesn't have crossdressing and it has more romance. HYD is more of a classic, though~

Still, I have a hard time thinking of *anything* like Ouran. It's a unique series despite using typical shoujo-series elements, and that makes it a good manga. ^_^

Host Club : Perfect Girl Evolution :: Adachi mangas : Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou ?

(As in, sorta like in some ways, but not at all in others.)

Edit: Come to think of it, there's another series with group of high-ego boys + low-romance girl + humor-over-plot -- Beauty Pop.

B-men Kazoku (hosted on ST)would also fit in a way the description of a group of bishonen boys around 1 cute yet brainless girl...

As for other comedies like this one i don't know if adachi's mangas could get in this cathegory... after all adachi's drawing style is quite far from the shoujo type and after i've read almost all of his work i can say that his genre is more the love triangle type of situation with 2 boys and 1 girl usualy.

Another title that might come to my head about 1 girl surrounded by bishonen could be "Utena" (not hosted)that's plain shojo with little humor...

another shoujo (1 girl lots of boys) but with a darker story might be yukihime (hosted on ST)

the only one that I can think of at the moment is that Hocke club manga. I forgot the name.

Its about a Hockey club (couple of guys only one girl) but with no hockey. >_<
everyone in the hockey club are rich except for the girl. It Focuses more on the humour too but there is a big chance that its gonna move to romance. I've read up to 3 chapters only though

Its made by the same mangaka who made Duck Prince and My Barbaric girlfriend.

Good point about Boys Kingdom, though. And a series that in turn like that, there's Ichiban!!! While it's not much like Host Club, it *does* have a random penguin following the heroine home, and that's always a plus.

(Does it bug anyone else that not one series with Penguin in the title has a penguin in them? There needs to be more penguins in manga, drat it. Teases.)

Seems to me that Ouran Host Club is unique precisely because it's a reverse-harem comedy shoujo series. Very rare, unless you bring in the shounen equivalents. (Shounen harem comedy... should I even bother to list the huge variety of those?) Perfect Girl Evolution does seem to come closest, in my opinion. I can see the connection with Hana Yori Dango, though (especially with the "poor" aspect, and the strong personalities of Tsukushi, Doumyoji and Rei).

Hmmm... I wonder if parallels could be drawn to Fruits Basket (anime) or Honey and Clover. Both contain fairly insane groups of bishounen surrounding a female. (Ooh... now I want to try and match up everyone! Tamaki = Shigeru, Kyouya = Yuki, Hikaru = Kyo, Kaoru = Haru, Honey = Momiji, Mori = Hatori. Okay, it's not perfect, but hey! :P And Ren could be Ayame... or whatever Yuki's older brother was called... it's been a long time since I read Fruits Basket). Still, the comparison drops as you progress further in the series, though. Fruits Basket turns dark and angst-ridden, while Ouran High remains light.

In terms of the over-the-top comedy that Host Club delivers, though, I can only name Ranma 1/2 and School Rumble which gave me the same feeling. Sumomo mo momomo came close near the beginning, but it degenerated after a while. Of course, those are all shounen series.

Penguin Brothers, Penguin Revolution -- the whole lot of them.

It's true that most reverse-harem-like shoujo stories typically stop at two or three bishies, and fewer still play it, er, not straight, but for the comedy.

I'd forgotten about Honey and Clover -- that's another good possibility.

Edit: Or I could simply edit it into substantive content, such that another reverse harem manga is Love Monster. Though again there it's a shoujo comedy romance. It's also my manga of deep feminist shame, but never mind that.
