An island is very safe, provided it's not too large, since the beaches need to be patrolled in case a few zombies come floating in, or walk in from out of the sea. Of course, this risk diminishes a lot if you're reasonably far from the coast. In that case, it's more important to check any humans who might come in from land by boat or by air, since they might have been infected.
Zombie Survival Guide brought up the location of an oil rig. It's fairly sell-sufficient (food supplies for several months, medical supplies, "housing", oil supplies for generator), so that's indeed a very good place to be. I think it could function well as a base of operations. You could scout the area with a helicopter, looking for islands near the coast (some have perhaps not been overrun with zombies yet) or going to the coastal towns for supplies.
Most of all, though, this topic shows one thing very clearly:
The best use of virtual reality would be a life-like simulation of a zombie outbreak. Games like Dead Rising are fun, but just imagine the potential of having the entire world as your playfield. Massive zombie outbreak. Dawn of the Dead for real.
It's on my wishlist.

^That reminds me...my friend and I were at the local arcade playing that Resident Evil game. The one with the Uzi's and a grenade button? Well, we got totally pwnt by the zombies. Damn them zombies. Damn them to hell for letting me waste $5.

If the world is like Dawn of The Dead........ I think our world will pretty much over, unless that the military institution of each countries can maintain their order...... Because Zombies cannot match tanks, artillery and fighter and bomber jets. But if the Military personnel is infected and there is no guarantee that the virus will not evolve to affect water .
Beowulf : Well, i think i will move to BC if something bad happens then :P. That RE Arcade game, the one using a gun and a arrow pad on the front of the gun ? That's sucks, prefer Ghost squad or Time Crisis

I really like this manga, but i think it is limited for the simple fact that it's a shounen manga. Zombie mangas are supposed to be Gorey, Explicit, have no boundaries... There are boundaries that a shounen manga can't cross which is why i think Highschool of the Dead is limited.

Haha we played GS and TC also. For GS, my friend calibrated his gun incorrectly and as a result we had quite the difficult time beating the game (which we did, except the President died). For TC...I'm a noob. 'Nuff said.

My best arcade game would be that old Jurassic Park II shooter, because I'm a cheapskate so I'm not willing to lose my quarters normally. But one time my father was having a business meeting with a hotel owner and the owner gave his son and I the run of the hotel's arcade and free tokens. Three hours later, I could clear the entire game without being hit more than twice.
Virtual reality zombie simulations would be fun, especially if they let you play as a zombie. Zombie players shouldn't be able to see their own health bars though, since they're supposed to not feel pain.
Uryuu freaky, pale and geeky,
how do your powers grow?
