Post Looking for darker toned mangas

Hey, I haven't gotten into any new manga in awhile, and I was wondering if anyone had any ssuggestions for me. I'm looking for a slightly darker manga, alonge the lines of Death Note.

I'm not a gothy person, so I perfer to stay away from the sterotypical stuff, such as Vampiers, ect. I'm a storyline kinda of person.

    Thanks for your time

Hmm... Liar Game? That's the closest equivalent to Death Note I can think of. Also, perhaps Team Medical Dragon (warning for explicit sex scenes). They're both not too dark, but contain a fair amount of complexity and head games.

Manga Genre Focus: Romance, Comedy, Slice-of-life. Primarily shounen, then seinen and shoujo.

    ^lol

Try Nartaru/Shadow Star. Starts off fluffy, ends up rather grimdark.

I'll let you decide on its merits.

excuse me for posting in this thread but I'm in the same situation as akuryou so thanks for the recommendations, I might try to follow it.

ah, I used to read MPD Psycho but i don't remember if i ever finished reading that title. I think MPD Psycho also an intelligent and dark manga. perhaps you also can try reading that one.

    thanks everybody.

Throwing in some old stuff here.

Much darker than death note, i recommend bokurano and saikano.

And if you're looking for some one-shots and dont mind lousy art, try Worlds by Fujisaki Ryu. It's a compilation of his old stuff and some stories are pretty interesting.

Dragonhead: Classmates stuck on a train end up stranded inside a mountain-pass during a massive catastrophe. The world outside goes to shit, people on the train go crazy, awesomeness ensues.

Monster: Doctor saves the life of a child, only to discover that the kid is a psychopathic lunatic who plans on 'paying him back' for his act of kindness.

Blue Heaven: A luxury ship with thousands of passengers discovers a derelict ship with one survivor on board. The survivor is a serial killer and his arrival on the ship kick-starts a rampage of bloodshed and anarchy that consumes everyone.

Also check out Manhole, Shamo, Jiraishin, Parasyte, Q.E.D, Baccano, 20th Century Boys, Berserk, The Mermaid Scar saga, Gantz, anything in general by Junji Ito, Hideshi Hino, Mochizuki Minetaro, Naoki Urasawa or Tsutomu Nihei

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami: it got all the gore you need and of course, you should be an adult to read this manga (Are you?)

Adapted from a novel and also turn into three movies of the same title.

Franken Fran is pretty dark and quite messed up, though it's strong point is atmosphere rather than story (It's probably the most messed up comedy I know).
Hellsing and Elfen Lied are even more on the comedy side of dark, first one even including the vampires you're trying to avoid, but you might wanna take a look anyway.

And you might want to take a look at this thread: Dark, serious, well drawn manga/anime
as it is roughly the same as yours.
