Personally, I do wish that some of the fansub groups would take up the offer. Not so much for self-interest, but for the future it promises. If this open-source fansubbing movement proves popular and successful, and if it merges with the simulcast (or one-day-late) movement going on for currently airing series, we could end up with a situation in which fansubbing of currently-aired series is welcomed online. Which would be the best of both worlds for the users, I would think, in terms of the trend and precedent it would set, even though the series may be streamed rather than downloadable.
It's basically the argument for doing something less-than-worthwhile in the beginning in order to have a greater reward in the end. Or like putting all that time and money into going to school regularly as a child in order to have a higher-paying job later as a university graduate. But I'm not sure if anyone else in this get-it-now fansub culture would be willing to make the necessary sacrifice.
