Okay, so I've found myself thinking about this recently. Which do you prefer in a manga/anime?
Anime/Manga that I consider to be more artistic (not to say they dont also have a good plot) are ones like Mushishi and Kino's Journey. Yeah the stories are interesting, but for me the appeal was more in the aesthetic way the story was crafted. Maybe the beautiful drawings, or the poetic way the episodes unfolded. And knowing in the end that it was just another experience in the characters life. It's like you can sit back and take a breath and really take everything in and enjoy rather than always rushing forward to the next chapter. There isn't really a ton of action and each of the episodes are kind of stand alone experiences rather than you know, saving the world from evil, or fighting the bad-guys whatever. For me, these styles also have much more second or third viewing/reading appeal than the plot driven stories.
On the other hand you have stories like Berserk, Bleach, One Piece, Death Note etc. where you're really reading to find out what happens next, not just you know, enjoying the environment thats been created.
Anyone else know what I mean?
It's true that the latter category way outnumbers the former, but that makes me I think I appreciate the artistic ones all the more. It's like pushing the boundaries of the medium a little bit. Maybe telling everybody to slow down a little bit.
