Thread: Harem Romantic Comedies (or Reverse-Harem)

This is just a question that popped up that I'm curious about. How many harem romance/comedies are out there? Can anyone list out the common ones and not-so-common ones?

Definition of harem: Manga/anime series in which there is a male character surrounded by 3 or more love interests, whose relationships with the male character are the primary focus of the series. Different from series that have only 2 strong love interests (which are love-triangle series, eg. Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, Absolute Boyfriend), or series that feature many relationships between the ensemble cast (eg. School Rumble, Ranma 1/2).
(Reverse-harem series basically reverse the genders.)

- Clannad
- Da Capo

Reverse Harem:
- Ouran High School Host Club
- Hot Gimmick
- Fruits Basket?
- Perfect Girl Evolution?

(It seems that most shoujo series stick to the love-triangle formula rather than going to 3 or more...)

Can anyone think of any more? And does anyone want to make speculations on why there seems to be such a wide disparity between the numbers catering to male versus female audiences?

Midori no Hibi looks like a harem to me.

Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa is a ... harem of some sort. Given the inherent gender-bending, I'm not sure either of the above terms quite fit though. And Strawberry Panic! is a yuri harem.

You're right that the usual method of complication for shoujo is not to add more potentials for the lead, making the relationship diagram an asterisk, but expanding the triangle out into rectangles and more complicated geometries. Fruits Basket, btw, I'd call just a triangle, as while there's lots of bishies, only two are remotely considered romantic possibilities for Tohru.

Well, more guys than girls read manga overall, and guys are more into the whole "multiple partner" thing. And if you look at the series, most of the male harem manga are just poor excuses for ridiculously amounts of fanservice.

Would Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei also be considered a Harem genre Manga?

If you check Miki Aihara's author page at MangaUpdates, you can see several titles. Check the titles, and you'll find several have been scanned, some completely. Have fun.

I don't think so. Cause there is one stalker girl, and the strict girl that likes the teacher. Everyone else is just weird lol.

More guys read manga, because I think boys fit more into the demographics. There are just more boys that like action shonens than there is girls liking shojos. Its probably from the shonen section that draws the most viewers.

One reverse harem I forgot: Five by Shiori Furukawa -- take Special A, remove those elements swiped from Ouran Host Club, and season lightly with They Too Love. Take five guys at the top of the class, girl transfers in at their level, and we're off.

(Kashimashi isn't really a reverse harem -- it's more a yuri harem.)
