I've only read about 6 of the manga serialised in Ikki but then again since I doubt any (okay maybe one or two) of us read the actual magazines we aren't gonna get anywhere without a fuckton of generalisations.

They seem to publish much more creative, often very weird, possibly even artistic (though I do despise many of the connotations of that word), short series. I'm envious that the french, and to a lesser extent the rest of mainland western Europe, get so many of the manga published in there licensed.

Among shounen magazines, these caricatures from Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga really hit the mark:

    and finally

The only other two magazines I have a particular interest in are Afternoon and it's less well known cousin Morning. I actually think Morning does and has had a substantially better selection than Afternoon, so I don't understand why there is such a difference in the number of series getting licensed in english from Afternoon by Darkhorse or sometimes Tokyopop, and the number getting licensed from Morning, especially condiering they are both from the same line of magazines and owned by the same company. I'm not even talking about the kind of 'sophisticated', niche series that only a few afficionado's would buy I mean just conventional manga like Kilico and Be Free. The other awesome thing about Morning is that it's Weekly.

I mean I recognise that Shueisha's BIG comics line has a lot to offer as well but there is just so much informaion readily available to build up an impression on the magazine. Perhaps when the new part of the english speaking fanbase ages and develops a bit more we'll see these series getting more attention.

Well, not everything is scannable, but you're right, they're pretty interesting. But it's not a magazine for the mainstream naruto follower for sure...

Lol, those are so right. To think about, the series are really way too common...

Hope so, though I doubt the kids who follow Naruto today, will read anything different. It's like the Harry Potter of Mangas.
I'll try to figure up some interesting series that I don't know yet from those two publishers...

I'm rather found of the sort of stuff Kodansha runs in Afternoon and Evening, yeah. More than Ikki, I confess.
Today is always the most enjoyable day. Just ask

But but but Witches and Ryuuguden and Sexy Voice and Robo and G Senjou Heavens Door...

What series run in Evening by the way? I can only think of Shamo.

I don't really read shonen all that much; the only series on that list that I'm currently reading is Double Arts.

That said, whatever happened to G Senjou Heaven's Door? The scanlators just sort of...died on that one.

Moyashimon and Girl Fight are both in Evening, and Koi Kaze ran there.

Afternoon is better represented in translation.

    Evening - Aniki

What about the new series in SJ, Nurarihyon no Mago, Barihaken and Double Arts, worth for read or new flops? I never read Jaguar btw...

Double Arts is alright, the concept is kinda sweet but since there have only been 7 chapters released I'll reserve my judgment for now. At worst, it's typical shonen fare.
