Thread: More recommendations

I know that there was another thread about manga recommendations, but I didnt want to hijack it. Im a very casual manga reader, and I just finished reading the Genshiken series, which although too short, I enjoyed quite a bit. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for manga similar to it, or along the lines of GTO? I also have read some of my brothers King of Hell and some Love Hina and that was enjoyable. I dunno, since I dont really follow the manga or anime scene its a little intimidating going to Borders or w/e and seeing approxamtely 200 different manga series on the shelves and not knowing what 97% of them are about. Anyways any recommendations would be truely appreciated in helping this old dog learn some new manga tricks. Thanks in advance.

Try Tuxedo Gin. It has the same feel-good charm GTO did.

There's this one volume, university-based comedy series called Ohikkoshi I bought recently that also has fantastic dialogue.

Hmm -- if you liked Love Hina, consider Negima!: Magister Negi Magi by the same mangaka. I think it's somewhat better, actually, though keeping track of all 30 classmates gets, um, challenging.

in my opinion you shoudn't read a manga with the same genre as GTO , that will make you feel bored (even if you love a specific genre ) , try to twist your mind by reading a completely differnt kind of mangas , maybe historical ones works , & from that genre Vinland Saga works the best , or mecha ones , like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or Eureka 7 , after read those kinds go back to your favourite genre , & you'll be hooked more to mangas .

I call shenanigans on this. Yotsubato takes a different approach to humour altogether.

Hmmm... If I understand your taste correctly, you're looking for manga set in the real world, but with some elements of outrageous comedy. And fairly realistic artwork too, I'm guessing. Probably from the older shounen/seinen (i.e. older teen boys / young men) category.

Yotsubato's humor may be too gentle, but it's definitely still a good series. I second the recommendation. Basically, it's a slice-of-life series about how a five-year-old girl views life. This is more in line with Genshiken's style of humor, I think.

I'm of two minds about Negima... on the one hand, it has a little more plot consistency than Love Hina, but they're essentially completely different genres - Love Hina is pure harem romantic comedy, while Negima is shounen action/adventure... with a lot of girls involved. The art style is good, of course... and the characters are definitely cute.

Perhaps School Rumble might suit. School Rumble is a high school romantic comedy of errors that makes A Midsummer Night's Dream look tame. Tsukamoto Tenma, an average ditzy high school girl, has a crush on her silent and weird classmate, Karasuma Ouji. Meanwhile, Harima Kenji, the school's delinquent, has a crush on Tenma! The both of them continually try to come up with various schemes to confess their love and draw closer to the object of their affections, but somehow everything always goes wrong. Hilarity and mayhem ensues when family, friends, schoolmates, rivals, butlers, pigs, and total strangers get drawn into the mess. The initial love triangle soon explodes into a multiplicity of relationships between a strong ensemble cast of characters. Tends to get a little repetitive sometimes, but it looks like the series is finally drawing to a close after 200-odd chapters. The storytelling style is sort of a cross between the insanity of Love Hina and the action-packed fights of GTO.

If you want something a little more serious, I think Hotman would suit. Hotman tells the story of the Furiya family, a group of half-siblings sharing the same mother who live together in modern-day Tokyo. The series just follows them as they struggle to hold their family together and find small happinesses in life. It's a touching, gentle and pleasant family drama, with an art style very similar to GTO, but storytelling pace more like Genshiken.

I think Skip Beat! is strong enough to cross the gender barrier. Although written for girls, its dramatic story and comedy elements make it attractive for all, I think. Skip Beat follows the story of Mogami Kyoko, a young country girl who left high school to follow her childhood friend and first love Sho when he went to the city to make his debut as a singer. Now that Sho has made it big, he treats her like garbage and callously admits to using her as a housekeeper and maid. Enraged, Kyoko declares war and decides that the best way to get revenge is to enter the show biz world herself and outshine Sho. But the road to stardom is a lot harder, funnier and just-plain-weirder than anyone would have imagined. XD
