My impression was that he was texting to Akari, but never sends them. He says something like "When did I start writing messages and never sending them?" which I thought was meant as implying that that was theonly messages he wrote and that Kanae didn't know this and therefore thought he was texting to someone secret. Which in a way could be seen as true.

I didn't like Kanae that much either. She felt way too girly and indecisive. Takaki was relaxed and nice, but distant. The only character who seemed to be at ease with herself in the movie was Akari, but that is hard to be sure of. My impression of the movie was that it was about the way lingering emotions affect our maturation. IMO it was kind of apparent that Takaki felt like shit in the last episode because of things he could not let go. He tried to carry all his memories with him all the time when there were things he would be better of forgetting.

I think she was expecting a letter from Takaki and that's why she never gave it to him, despite the fact that he lost it. From what i could tell, the letters were actually good bye letters. Thats why when they departed, they were telling each other that they know they'll be ok from now on. To me it was their way of getting closer between the two.

no, im pretty sure they lost contact between each other by then. It was a good at least 5+ years already. They initially moved away at like 6th grade, and in cosmonaut, Takaki was a senior getting ready to graduate. He was texting no one, he said something like, "when did i get into the habit of texting with no destination." (*makes me sad inside, because....) But yeah, they lost complete contact with each other already.

I dont think he did anything wrong, he was just being polite to her as a friend. It was an unrequited love; again they lost contact with each other.

Yeah, Takaki did hold onto her. He had his hope that they'd met again and what not. I believe it was partly kind of due to the letters being not given. He didn't get the closer he wanted, but Akari was able to move on. Iirc Takaki did say that he didn't get to say the things he wanted and they were all written in the letter. At the end though, when all things were said and done. I want to say Takaki walked away with a smile (pure speculation). I think he finally got the closer he wanted when she left. I think he realized that she moved on and that he should too. Again pure speculation, but that's what i want to believe. I'm sure Makoto Shinkai purposely ended it like that for us to speculate what happens to everyone.

*so many similarities between Takaki and me.... T-T

also as a last note, i have seen the movie like 5 times now...so yeah... <3 5 hours i dont regret at all.

I'm almost certain that it wasn't good bye letters because when he was in the train or trainstation he was talking about how he wanted to give her the letter so much because it contained all his feelings. Could have been she had a good bye letter, but then that wouldn't make much sense if it was because why wouldn't she give him the letter than? I thought she was saying take care and good luck because he was moving even farther this time.

And when Kanae and he were at the convenient store he was texting her while he was waiting for Kanae to finish. The whole texting w/o a destination once again was what I perceived as him feeling guilty about it since he wasn't sure why he was with Kanae.


On a side not, now I understand why he likes Kanae so much, because he likes all the characters no one cares about. D:

I agree. I also think that Akari was expecting a letter from him, and when he didn't give her anything she may have thought he wanted to "end things"...and Takaki never told her about his lost letter or his feelings about her so in the end things just kinda fell apart.

That was the most depressing thing I have ever watched.

Tohno turns out to be nothing more than a man caught endlessly in his own sadness with no job and no drive. It would not surprise me if he killed himself soon after the sequence of events in this movie took place. Women practically throw themselves at him vagina-first and he's never happy. I'll go ahead and quote Stephen Wright here to just give the entire movie a theme:

"It was the first time I was in love and I learned a lot. Before that I had never even thought about killing myself."

The movie reeks of reality regarding an extremely depressing situation. The animation was the most beautiful I've ever seen in regards to anime but the story was butt ugly.

It wasn't exactly a "happy ending" but he wasn't so depressed anymore towards the end of the movie since he was finally able to movie on with his life.

You're exaggerating. He wouldn't kill himself, he just started to change his life. It's uphill, but it's gonna be better IMO

Yea. I'd characterize this as a bittersweet ending. The entire story up 'till the ending was depressing as hell, but the very last scene gave a (very small) uplifting note to the entire film.
