Thread: Mangakas with super art

Horrible title for a thread, I know. The point is which mangakas would you say has the most attractive or distinct art style. Or...Which are simply your favorite drawers. So to speak.

Give the name, example of mangas and a motivation.

Urasawa Naoki - Monster, 20th Century Boys

Urasawa has an easily recognizable style and he isn't afraid of drawing ugly people. Everybody in his mangas look disinct and movement, scenery and expressions are all very nicely and fluently intergrated. His drawings allways fit the kind of story he's telling, so to speak.

Inoue Takehiko - Vagabond, Real, Slam Dunk

I've been a fan of Inoue's amazing art ever since I read the first chapter of Vagabond and it just keeps improving. Reading Slam Dunk I was first surpprised to see just how ugly it began and how much he improved during it hte course of it.
This boys style is also very distinct and easily recognizable with great attention to detail. He mixes a lot of calligraphy techniques in his drawings giving it a genuine "japanese" feel and his stlye works great in action, dialogues and comedy. The two things I think stand out is his backrounds and his style of drawing Musashi's wild hairdo. I often sit and just watch the amazingness for a couple of minutes before reading on.

Miura Kentaro - Berserk

Miura has a completely unique style. This crazy guy can draw an entire army with amazing attention to detail, and that's probably why Berserk won't be finished in another ten years. But with amazing art such as this it is worth the wait. His style, which reminds me of relief printing somehow, works great for the mad action of the aptly named Berserk.

Now, I want to hear what you think. Agree or disagree? What stuns you?

I agree with all the ones you've suggested. I'd say right now that Takehiko Inoue is probably the most versatile out of them since he can do stylised artistic images as well as incredibly detailed and realistic. I think he's particularly good at faces. Every character he draws looks as detailed and planned out as every other. I suspect he may have to use real life models a fair bit to achieve this though.

I don't have a great amout of time to reply now so I'll limit myself to one other mangaka.
Kenichi Sonada: Gunsmith Cats, Cannon God Exaxxion, Riding Bean, various anime.
I remember one anime podcast calling him "the de-facto character designer of the 80s", I think this is a great way of putting it. Whether you realise it or not, you will probably have seen examples of Sonada's work, be it his characters or mechanical designs. His style oten lacks the realistic proportions compared to some mangaka, but his page layout, choreography and sense of dynamism are first class. Nobody draws a gunfight like Sonada. Nobody.

+1 for Inoue Takehiko and Urasawa Naoki ! (And Miura Kentaro lately)

I'd add :
Tsukasa Hojo : angel heart (and before : city hunter, etc.)
Hiroaki Samura : Blade of the immortal
Oda : One Piece

Well, let's start with Mi-kyung Yoon (Bride of the Water God), and Yuki Urushibara (Mushishi) as obvious ones. Hoshino Ashinano (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou) does wonders with hatched pen-and-ink (instead of screentones), and Kozue Amano's landscapes of Neo-Venezia in Aria are always breathtaking. And while Kiyohiko Azuma doesn't do lush or pretty, I'm always impressed by how much he can express not just in Yotsuba's facial expressions but her body language.

@Jamie, Yeah, probably Inoue has the most versatile, but he doesnt use it to it's full extent. I guess he is limiteed by the mangas he draw noe, but... there is a lot of potential still there. Never heard of Sonada though... Are his mangas good?

@Shautieh, Samura is awesome, I must agree. His slightly sketchy style is always impressive in all aspects of his mangas and always aptly used. Although I do not know Tsukasa I would appreciate a pitcure on photobucket or somthing? small defining pitcure, since it's alien to me. Oda Ithink is much about taste though. Personally I feel he is way to childish, but, as I said, all about taste.

@Pseudorandom, Only yokohamablabla, and Mushishi has wandered into my screen and all very beautiful in their own calm way, they have not gotten me tears to pour. That is saying a lot since I am a sensitive soul, but... Maybe finishin might be in order?

Finishing YKK is in order, yeah. (I can take or leave Mushishi myself.) The last volume, just about every chapter sucker-punches me, and the final pages leave me misty-eyed every time.

As for Oda, I agree it is clearly about taste, but knowing it is its first manga I have really high expectations for the future for him

I've always been fond of Aoyama Gosho, especially with Detective Conan.
