Dizzy... Would you mind teling me a bit of a synopsis for cross game, as a general premise and probable length (since you know Adachi so well). Sorry if this is off topic, but I'm genuienly interested.

Probably length of Cross Game is anybody's guess. 11 volumes in, the latest chapters are still bringing in new complications.

I leave the description to Dizzy, though, as he's better at those than me.

Heh... the trouble with Cross Game is that there's a huge spoiler at the end of Volume 1, which changes the story radically... and so you can't really describe the true nature of Cross Game without giving away the spoiler. But I'll try anyway:

Cross Game follows the story of Koh Kitamura, the son of a sporting goods store, and the four sisters of the Tsukishima family, who run the local neighbourhood combination batting-cage and cafe. Koh was born on the same day and at the same place as Wakaba Tsukishima, the second of the sisters, and has been linked romantically to her practically from birth. Of course, this causes a lot of trouble for him, since half the boys in school - especially one big bully Akaishi - are also in love with her. To make things worse, Aoba Tsukishima, the third sister who is a year younger than the couple, loves Wakaba a lot and hates Koh for taking away her sister's attentions. Aoba, a baseball-mad tomboy, starts a rivalry with Koh that continues all the way into high school. During high school, Koh is persuaded by Nakanishi, his best friend, to take up baseball again after having been defeated by Aoba when they were younger. He also wants to fulfill Wakaba's dream of seeing him at Koshien stadium, where the high school baseball tournament finals are played. But the road to Koshien is not as easy as it seems, as school politics, rival teams, and domestic neighbourhood upsets all continue to get in the way. And what happens when Aoba starts to find herself having feelings for Koh as well? Can she displace her sister from Koh's thoughts - and does she even want to?

There! I somehow managed to avoid the spoiler (I think) while still providing a fair amount of accuracy. Of course, there are also a lot of cross-currents of relationship drama and baseball fever that aren't portrayed in my summary. Ichiyo and Momiji - the eldest and youngest sisters - also play strong supporting roles in the series, as well as a few other members from the team. This series already shows the same excitement and drama in baseball matches as H2, and the same or greater level of romantic tension than the Hiro-Hikari relationship and the Katsuya/Minami/Tatsuya triangle in Touch.

Seriously, if you read H2 and Touch first, and then read Cross Game, you can see the parallels very clearly, as well as where Adachi has surpassed his previous storytelling efforts and is starting to move to greater heights. Cross Game is likely to be Adachi at his new best. But I'm guessing the series is going to go on for at least 30 volumes.

Cross Game will be my next! It sounds really good. Finished H2 yesterday and I really loved the ending although, and I think many might agree, Hideo was quite an idiot. Seriously. Well, I'm sold now. Adachi fan I am and nothing else until after I've finished most of his series.

Edit: Thanks Dizz. Really helpful synopsis!

You really liked the H2 ending? It seemed really abrupt to me, not so much the unknown result of the next match, but the whole situation between Hiro, Hideo, Hikari, and Haruka.

Regardless, I don't plan on starting Cross game till Adachi finishes it, I don't want wait each week for another on-going manga ^_^

    Spoiler warning!

Yeah, maybe since I had heard that it would be very open and I knew that it was going to end I felt that it wasn't as abrupt as people said. I steeled myself before it happened and was therefore left with a warm and nice feeling afterwards. I felt that the last game was awesome, probably the best game in the series thanks to the tight rivalry and all.

It was also nice to see that Hideo in the end realized that he was just another stupid teenager with a lot to learn about relationships (my impression) and that the "bet" between him and Hiro was just another stupid thing he said that, even though Hiro took it seriously, did not matter to them in the end. Hiro just had to show Hideo that through beating him and that's why I think he won. But this is just my impression, I'm sure many will disagree.

But that's why I liked the ending, anyway, although Haruka could have gotten more attention towards the end just because she's so damn cute.

EDIT: I can also say that my favorite part was with that asshole english teacher foreign student idiot. I found it very touching the "I love you" scene. I hope there is more of that in Adachis other mangas.

Warning - Continued Spoilers for H2's ending

Yeah, Haruka is cute, and I certainly like her a lot, but I still preferred the HiroxHikari pairing, dangit! Maybe I've got a fascination with strong-willed girls. (Or maybe it's the hairstyle... I also happen to like Katsuki from Katsu! and Miku from Jinbe, both of whom share the same character archetype as Hikari.) My favourite scenes were when Hikari cried in front of Hiro when they were playing catch after her mother's death, and the night before the last match when she had to wish him "Good luck". He was the only one who ever saw her tears... and it's just so sweet to see the silent understanding between the two of them.

Your observation about Hideo's blockheadedness was interesting - I had never thought about it that way. My interpretation of the ending was based entirely around Hiro's thoughts during his last pitch - how Hideo was always so honest and straightforward, like a gentleman that he was, that his honesty literally forced Hiro to fight him fair and square on the field instead of trying to trick him. And that same metaphor could have been applied to his relationship with Hikari as well... instead of suspecting his best friend of trying to move in on his girlfriend, he brought it out into the open and trusted them all to honestly examine their own feelings and do the right thing, rather than try to sneak around each other's backs and hide secrets from each other. And that trait of his was what made Hikari fall in love with him in the first place.

And to make things worse, Hiro knew that Hideo and Hikari would never be close because they were both too strong. They couldn't really come together until Hideo had been broken down to realise that he needed Hikari as well... that he had to depend on Hikari just as Hiro did in his childhood, for her to really love him. And so, because Hiro loved Hikari and wanted her to be happy, he had to beat Hideo at the game to open up that place in Hideo's heart where Hikari belongs. And Hiro had to sacrifice his own love for her in the process... for the night before the last match was the last time Hikari would cheer for him against Hideo, and probably the last time she would let him be the one to see her tears. Now, Hideo and Hikari have each other... and Hiro has a plane to catch to the major leagues.

Aww... the awesomeness of H2's ending sometimes leaves me speechless. But it's really subtle, and you have to catch all the undercurrents in the previous chapters to see WHY it's so incredibly good.

    (continued spoilers!)

Yeah, you have some damn good points, but in the end we are basically saying the same thing, although you do it more eloquently and with deeper character analysis. I'll still say that Hideo was just a "blockhead", but I might agree with you on the Hiro part. Hiro always seemed to have more to him than just being a baseball nerd. Genuinely caring, but a bit dim at times and almost as stubborn as Hideo.

    (Spoilers end)

And, as we both have already said, awesome manga. I've started on Crossgame now and it's already after only two volumes really interesting. I'll probably instigate some more discussion on that in the Cross Game thread when I've caught up to the resent chapters.
