Well, I've just finished Mahoraba, and of course I loved it to death. However.. even in that series, they didn't end up together at the end. I was really looking forward to an ending like that, so I'm happy that it was such a good, happy-feeling series, but also disappointed that their relationship showed no signs of going forward at all. I have a kind of bittersweet- feeling emotion flowing through me right now.

You mentioned the manga. I can't find it here, so do you happen to know of anywhere else I could look in order to possibly find it? And, does the manga just cover the same story of the anime, or does it keep going AFTER the anime?

It keeps on going after the anime. Scanlations are ongoing and up to Volume 11 right now, whereas I think the anime's storyline finishes somewhere around Volume 8-9. I thought you'd be pretty happy with the declaration of love in the anime's ending, though. In any case, as of Volume 11, they're officially a couple (and dealing with all the different reactions to it by each personality, too), so no worries there. As for where to get it, MangaTraders is probably the best.

Hey, if you want the most conclusive ending I have ever seen to any romantic comedy, you should read/watch Maison Ikkoku. That ending is guaranteed to leave you happy. It's seriously the best ending I've ever seen for a romantic comedy. The I''s manga also has a good ending, though the journey there can be kind of painful, and it's a shounen series (which means lots of fanservice). I'm not sure if the I''s anime lives up to it's original, though.

That's odd. Unless I missed something, I didn't see any declaration of love in the ending. I'll have to watch the final hour over again. It's definately a series I'm keeping, so I'd have gotten back to it again eventually, anyway. (I just checked final moments again just to be sure, and still saw no declaration of love)

I own the entire Maison Ikkoku series (both anime and manga) and the manga is my absolute favorite manga series of all time. I'm glad someone else thinks so highly of it. I'll be sure to try and find I"s, and to look for the Mahoraba manga.

Thank you yet again for your help

Oh, I meant Shiratori's declaration to Tamami that he loves Kozue and was willing to stay by her, not a love confession to Kozue herself. That comes later.

And yeah, Maison Ikkoku remains one of my favourites. It's not my favourite romance manga - that honour goes to Salad Days (which is an anthology of short stories all about love, with some characters reappearing in later stories) - but it comes in second. And the ending is the best.

If you're a really big fan of these type of stories, may I recommend every single manga series done by Mitsuru Adachi? He and Rumiko Takahashi (author of Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2) are contemporaries and good friends, and they share similar art styles. But better yet, most of his series have the same blend of elements of drama and romance and comedy and the occasional bittersweet moment that made Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2 such successes. But his storytelling is more subtle, so don't expect the same conclusive ending that you see in Maison Ikkoku... most of his endings will probably leave you with the same feeling as the ending of the Mahoraba anime. The journey there, however, is indescribably poignant and sweet. Of all his series, I personally think his greatest masterpiece to date is probably H2, but for a good introduction to his storytelling style, try Rough first. You can download it from StopTazmo.

(I was wondering when you were going to bring up Adachi.)

To add to that, the Adachi anime to watch is Touch. Long, but excellent.

Wow, I just finished Rough which is in fact my first adachi manga. I have to say it was really really good, though I'd like to know who won =D (I guess everyone else does too). But it's true that the story was developed nicely and ended well.

Any suggestions on other Adachi manga?

@saber8689:*rubs hands* Ah, Adachi. My recommendations are:

Touch - baseball, 26 volumes. Manga scans are hung a couple volumes from the end, the faithful anime is completely subbed. Rivalry between twins for the girl next door, basically.

H2 - baseball, 34 volumes, scans complete but the last couple volumes are a crappy job. Two guys, two girls, all with names beginning with H, with friendships and rivalries crossing just about every direction in there. I think it's the next best.

Niji Iro Tougarashi - ninjas, 10 volumes, scans complete. Only, "ninjas" doesn't really cover it. Alternate history Bakumatsu era, with 6 half-brothers and their half-sister traveling to find their common father -- who turns out to be the shogun. Cutest baby ninja EVAH.

If you want something a little more shoujo, there's Hiatari Ryoukou! ("Sunlight All Around"; if you want something current, by a master at his game, Cross Game is ongoing.
Today is always the most enjoyable day. Just ask Yotsuba.
