Default So what's like Giant Robo or Patlabor?

Not that they're alike at all, I'm really asking for two different reccomendations.

First of all something that's like Giant Robo. a vaguely similar set up would be nice (agents trying to save the world) but keeping the same tone of the show is also important. High production values, over the top, action packed, fun and with an overall epic feel.
Examples of what I'm looking for include Read or Die OVA and The Big O

Secondly if you can think of something similar to the the first Patlabor OVA and movie. I'm not so much interested in the real robot aspect, but the dynamic of excellently realised characters in their workplace.
I suppose my first move should be watching the rest of the franchise, however I saw the second movie and found that the tone had completely changed and it was now a verbose, half-baked, unplausible lecture in political science. So I'd appreciate if someone who had seen some of the other works in the patalbor franchise could say which of them are the most similar to the first two.

an excellent example of what I'm thinking of would be Planetes.

All suggestions welcome, any help appreciated.

Thanks very much for trying but those really aren't what I'm looking for at all.

To clarify, the mech aspect in both of these series in unimportant. What I'm really looking for are similarities in style and general themes.

For example ROD the ova is similar in style/execution to Giant Robo because it is over-the-top, has great animation and is action-packed; it is similar to Giant Robo in general themes because they both have super-powered agents trying to save the world from a dastardly plot.

seriously, is there anyone who can think of anime/manga similar to either Giant Robo and ROD on the one hand or Planetes and Patlabor in the other?? They don't need to be exactly the same, I went into detail for the sake of clarififaction for anyone who hadn't seen one of them , just reminiscent of each other. Please, any suggestions appreciated.

I've only seen the first half of the series and the OVA, but GateKeepers sounds what you are looking for in terms of Giant Robo and ROD.Black Lagoon is also fairly over the top in action. Its not about a group of people trying to stop some catastrophy. Its more about the people on the other side of that, or atleast on the line that separate the really bad people from just trying to survive. Probably the most over the top anime in recent memory would probably be Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Its so over top, you won't believe your eyes. Patlabor on the other hand, is a little harder to define, I think. Closest thing I can think of is maybe You're Under Arrest.

Thanks you very much Silent killer. I've already seen both TTGL and black lagoon and enjoyed them both a lot, I'll check out Gatekeepers right away.

Ubr, I've already seen Planetes and it is exactly what I'm looking for, so if you can think of anything similar to it then I'd be most grateful.

I don't know, Crazy fishing isn't the real title because what i read is already translated in indonesian. The Japanese title is Tsuribaka Nisshi.
