Try Kurau: Phantom Memory if you liked Planetes, and of course, Vinland Saga, but you've probably already tried that.
Also if you want over the top and great art and nice characters try Spirit of Wonder, both the Manga (the original) and the two anime that are out for it.
Thank you very much guys. I'm enjoying Kurau phantom memory and Emma but Gatekeepers is slightly harder to find. Anyway you've all been a great help.
One little recommendation if you come back to check this: Galaxy Express 999 anime and the Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) Manga Series are; by far, the most inspirational things I have ever watch/read.
Seriously, GUNNM made me look at the world differently in just how bad a life can be for someone who doesn't even have a foundation on how they came to exist living in a world in which your existence isn't protected or even considered by those literally above you to be anything more than a liability. (At least at the start of the story.)

You probably already know then about the live action of Gunnm being made by James Cameron.
I really would like to watch galaxy express 999, Starblazers, etc. They're pretty old so I doubt I'd be able to find them on the internet. Perhaps if I ever see the dvd box set on sale I'll buy it.

Seriously does, you only reached her "finding herself" stage. There's a huge vortex of plot twists and climaxes from then on. She hasn't even experienced the first large scale tragety yet.
GUNNM is awesome. It hasn't got the best of beginnings, but the scope just kept growing, still is.
So I read the last 5 volumes of Battle Angel Alita last night. You're both completely right. It just got better, and better, and before I knew it, I was reading something epic. Some thoughts of mine:
Fury is the best dog in any manga ever... ;_;
Murdock is one of the most manly old men ever.
Lou Collins > Dr. Ido
Octopus lips are hot.
Not as hot as Desty Nova's assistant.
Desty Nova himself is pretty cool too.
haha! Yeah. Be sure to read last order too. It starts of very confusing, but still it improves madly.
****Insert misread post****
I'd Hit it.

And another thing - In case you haven't checked it out yet, Last Order takes place as if that "Doll Bomb" incident was the end of the first story. The final chapters and epilogue are ... the Mangaka's rushed output from an impending deadline. Last Order has it's own Epicness; but expect a more... shounen feel about 4 or 5 volumes into the story and then a Mega Epiphany of St Louis, Missouri purportions.
