    Yeah, in order of emo-ness:

    1. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
    2. Saikano
    3. Air
    4. Full Moon
    5. Cowboy Bebop. Sorta.

    There's a crapload of depressing anime out there. Since your definition is somewhat unspecific I just included the somewhat hardxxxcore emo ones. Enjoy!
    is 'Air' really sad? cuase a friend recommended it to me, and i've only seen like 10 minutes of the first ep. and it doesnt seem that sad.

    I actually chuckled when he died...but I'm the exception, not the rule.

    Since the brother was a complete douche, I was kinda glad he died >_>

    @Chidongan: keep watching. it gets more depressing. one of my friends got all weepy on me while watching it. =/

    @dragoon38900: yeah, that was somewhat...weepy.

    Speaking of which, has anyone here read The Forever War? Its circumstances are somewhat similar to Voices of a Distant Star.

    Spirited Away was heartwrenching... but the only thing to make me cry was what happened to Chopper in One Piece after he went back to Dr Hiruluk with the broken arm, horn, and leg to give him the mushroom that ended up killing him.

    *cry*

    I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
    I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
    before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

    Since people seem to be expanding into manga now: Gantz. Oku doesn't really have any reservations about killing characters so you might see some of you favorites die right before your eyes.

    Also Tsubasa Resivoir Chronicle. It's pretty upbeat and has that CLAMP feel to it but in this recent arc I've been suprised at how dark it is.
