Default Why does Gantz use 1337

We all know that Gantz uses leet, but does anyone know why? Leet was invented and orignially used by hackers in the 80's. Does this have any significance as to Gantz's identity or is it a Red Herring? Knowing Gantz it maybe just to annoy. How is it that the Gantzers seem to be able to read leet with ease?

I see so we are not even sure where it orignated from. Unless we can find an early raw we can't be sure. If the mangaka didn't do it then it makes sense but if he did then the question still remains and does Japanese leet look diffrent than English leet.

Leet doesn´t work with japanese writing system, so unless gantz does use english, something I doubt, it has to be a scanlation thing.

Judging by the anime, Gantz does make errors—for example, characters will frequently be written mirrored right-to-left.

In the anime, this is reflected in subtitling by misspelt words or backwards letters. I suspect the 1337 is a way of expressing the same thing happening in the manga, though I'll grant that I've never taken a close look at Gantz's text in the original Japanese.

So we are going with the idea that the mangaka did not do it.

We're going with the idea that it's one way of expressing what the mangaka did, as what the mangaka did is pretty tied to using the original characters which is a bit of a barrier to translation.

Depending on what exactly you were thinking when you wrote that post, that could mean a short answer of either "yes" or "no". If you're asking "Did the mangaka write 1337", the answer is no.

(Hey, you folk who actually do the translating, feel free to chime in anytime and save me a bunch of wild-assed guessing :) )

Yes. Leet speak is due to scanlations. Gantz does not actually speak leet.
