I apologize if this turns out to be incorrect, off-topic, or if it is common knowledge.
According to "Gantz Labo", a Japanese fansite, Oku Hiroya based the character of Nishi off of Sakakibara Seito, a teenaged murderer. I know that there are many obvious examples of him basing his characters off of popular icons (Lara Croft, Golgo13), but this one seems to be lesser known.
Can anyone think of anymore "Gantz" pop-culture references like this? (Besides the aforementioned obvious ones, naturally.)

That was an interesting read...
twisted... but interesting.
nice find, good piece of infomation, i love how oku incorperates real life into his manga.
Do you think that Sakurai's model might actually be somekind of parody of Onizuka?
looks more like Eiji the Psychic
wow...interesting find!! I followed the wikipedia link and even read on "girl A".. didn't know that there exist such a happening...
I think three characters in the buddha mission were based off of the three stooges:
Wannabe army guy with bowl-cut hair: Mo
Guy with long coat and crazy hair: Larry
Also, there was a chapter in the buddha mission called "Mo, Larry, Curly".
I don't recall any of tyhe three stoges acts involving them being squished, eaten and becoming an alien or being choped to bits.
(although they were once eaten by lions after running their own facist country)
Amazing, amazing find. Nishi seems very much like this. Didn't he even say at one point in the manga that killing animals was no longer enough of a thrill for him? Just like this kid was. Wow.
"From now on, if you misread my name or spoil my mood I will kill three vegetables a week..."
This kid was in Gantz for real! He has gone on the spring onion mission!
But that kid only killed ywo people. I'm sure our Nishi has killed more than that. None the less good find.
