It is an extremely formal way of saying "you" ([edit: board doesn't like kanji much, apparently]). That sounds like a proper label to me.
If you are to accept the modern derogatory slang use in Japan, why do you also not accept its less-derisive English-speaking-world counterpart?

Unfortunately it isn't possible to have a meaningful discussion on the topic, as Gantz's technology is (deliberately, and I think it makes for a better story) so alien to anything we have in the real world (or that the rest of the world in Gantz has) that we can't begin to guess how it works. Take the X-gun, for example: there are at least three unsatisfactory answers as to how it could work, possibly dozens if someone really sat down and thought about it, and no good answers.
That said, the career paths most likely to lead to anything vaguely like Gantz technology are: materials science (suit materials, sword materials, etc.), chemical/electrical engineering (power supplies for all equipment), physics (to figure out how to put energy from one place into another in times and manners of your choosing), biology/neurology (to get the "human copier" and Gantz's memory-wiping capabilities), or gym teacher (to increase general bitterness at the world).
