I´m sure that the translators are aware that they have changed the joke. They´ll have a reason. They have translated the japanese text, didn´t like the result, and changed the joke. I assume simply because the joke is Japanese specific and the wanted to have an American joke. In Germany they did the same, and in fact the new joke was relatively funny.

    Gantz says:
    Kato-Fell haha
Kartoffel means potato. Potatoes are traditional German food (though voyagers brought them from South Amerika xD) and if you call someone "Kartoffel" ("Kato-Fell") in Germany, you call him a peasant what is often equal to call him stupid.

^ No problems with adapting the joke, except that "potato" is harmless and very laughable whereas comparing Katou to Mr Sulu doesn't really make any sense to me and doesn't particullary get me laughing. Some might think it funny though. Some ominous curiosity make me wonder what kind of crap they came up with in the Brazilian Portuguese version...

^^ Well, if you already know the fan-translations and read some corp trans like that now, you're getting really disappointed of all these "westerzations" (you konw what I mean...) destroying a bit of the original story. That's why I thought the german translation of MangaPlanet was humiliating the original manga...

Do other versions like the German and French translations have translated sound effects? I was wondering because GANTZ very frequently has those two-page spreads with just one huge transparent sound effect. I'm curious as to what that'll look like translated...

The sound effect situation will be interesting. For the majority of GANTZ, the sound effects mostly look cheap and don't seem to be hand drawn at all. Also, it's sometimes difficult to understand what's going on if one can't understand the sound effects as a lot of the action is reliant on sound effects to explain what's happening as opposed to lots of explanation by characters you might find in other manga.

For those two reasons I think switching to English sound effects is perfectly acceptable. However, later on Oku switches to transparent, hand-drawn sound effects that are actually quite well done. I wonder how they'll deal with those.
