-chan is generally used in conjunction with a child's name. For example, the kid from the Oni mission, Takeshi, would be spoken of as "Takeshi-chan". In short, he's calling Katou a child.
he dosn use chan he uses cha, is there a diffrence
also, if thats all it is, than gantz is stupid I think (the ball, not the series)

according to the show, its the name of a singer.Originally Posted by Lintor
Actually chan is a prefix you add at the end of someones name. Usually it's a sign of affection, you would normally would use it for someone you really like. It can be someone close to you or someone you have feelings for.
chan-used at the end of a girls name
kun-used at the end of a boys name
typically you use san at the end of everyones name to be respectfull wheter they're male or female.
same thing with "sama or sempai" sometimes you use a prefix and sometimes you don't, but it's up to you if you want to use it.
More than likely Gantz used cha rather than chan to be a smart ass or he thought it was funny. Basically to imply that Kato is more femine that he should be.
But I find it weird Kato goes around shouting Kei-chan all time even though Kurono is male maybe he didn't want to use kun and sound gay.

chan doesn't have to refer to a girl...
it only marks a closeness between the speaker and the listener...
most often used between kids, adults addressing young kids, or between really close friends
in kato and kei's case, kato grew up with kei, so he refers to him as chan..... it has nothing to do with gayness..
kun is used when addressing someone of equal status, in an informal speech.... usually heard in the classrooms between students...
but it can also be used by a superior when addressing a subordinate so that the speaker can appear more humble...
yeah your right as well. It's been awhile since I was back in school my teacher wouldn't let us use anything other than san.
But I thought you weren't really allowed to use kun at the end of a womans name, and that's why chan is mostly used instead.
I seem to recall that katocha is some... celebrity or something, someone japanese people would've heard of. Thus, the Kato-cha is kind of a pun mixing Kato-Chan with katocha.
I told him once or twice; to stop playin' cards, and shootin' dice.... he's in the jailhouse now
gantz was lol-ing at the singer one Katocha, going to Kato-cha, not kato-chan because there was no N at the end so go away.
the -chan is a honorific used for little kids, close groups (such as gangs, ala tet-chan), and used by nerds who want to act japanese.
the -kun is only for boys and is usually for boys of around th same age as the one saying the -kun.
