I don't think the name 'Gantz' matters at all. Someone that used to belong to a previous Tokyo Team just gave it it's nickname and Nishi continued to use it. That's all. The Osakans never called it Gantz.
But I think this is a pretty fascinating development. I also think that the numbers the fat woman speaks are some sort of alien signal and that everything the guy and his organisation have done is just a game to them. They have no real clue what's going on either.
Gantz is a german surname. I don't think it's a nickname. I think the hunters just never bother..asking nicely what it's name is. Nishi and Kurono have asked to be sent out first, Kurono has asked to see the thumbnails of humans in Gantz's memory, Nishi asked to see the timer to Katastophe, so it's not like they can't ask for a name. Nobody has really taken the time to get to know Gantz. No wonder he's an sarcastic asshole, he's fucking lonely.

Its strange for this to happen in any country at random, especially ones that are taking place in this company's racket. Maybe they just draw out of a hat?
I love how the company owner mysteriously figures out that his daughter is secretly a super genius by translating her out-of-the-blue numbers. Its not random at all.
My guess: The old man is lying. If there was no reason to hide, then what was the point of making everything invisible? Heck, the vamps would've killed him already if it were all true and supposedly out in the open.
