When you wrote "Tetsou then sees a couple run towards their car armed with their gas bomb" I thought you meant, they come running towards our new car, with the bomb in their hands. Because I didn't think we'd have a line of sight to the rigged car.
About the shots, I didn't assume anything really. You said automatic fire from the main road. Tetsuo will assume it's the soldiers at the checkpoint (not the ones at our fence). Just because the direction fits and they are carrying rifles. Automatic fire is very distinctive, and those kind of weapons rarely end up in the hands of citizens. And he wouldn't assume a real 'terrorist' attack to take place.
The last part is too bad. If I had known that we can't see our target fence from our current parking spot, I wouldn't have written that I get to the car. Because if we can't see the soldiers there, we have no way of knowing if some of them get drawn away. Could also be that 30 additional soldiers showed up just now.
Had I known that we can't see it, I would've proceeded to the roof and watched from there. And then gotten to the car when an opportunity presented itself. There would be a delay were things can change again, but it's better than going in blind.
But it's cleared up now.
