^My idea isn't too far away from yours actually; it's just that I think by trying to speed up the process, Gantz ended up having a few glitches.
If it was only about the speed, it could go like this: transfer all characters, open the ball as soon as they're all there, and transfer right away.
But they still had time to chat, and the ball displayed those symbols, and there was the song, as if - like remarked by my friend Larry - Gantz was trying to act normally but couldn't, or it was a secondary element triggered by the primary function, which would be the ball opening up.
Then again, there's the matter of the room being dark... one can notice that outer lights even produced the shadows of the characters, so it wasn't all that dark to begin with, but suposedly they can't really see much; like with Katou telling Kurono who's in the room as if he weren't able to see, and Kurono bumping into Reika. If we take into consideration that they couldn't see a thing, then the enabling of the song would be to aware them of the ball being opened, but I doubt it.
And in any case, the screen displaying those messages should produced light, even though a faint one.
