Well your mindset is a bit different between dying horribly from ghastly injuries and sitting on a train chatting to a guy. People tend to freak out when they're about to die.

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return.
To obtain, something of equal value must be lost.

    No even before that
I'm not too sure but I believe he said he's been wanting to get out for a long time.

    @Lucky.Freak

I kinda feel bad for people blasting you out of the water when you actually bothered to write a paragraph about something that you seemed proud of so I guess I'll talk about Nishi's role according to me.

    __________________________________________________ _____

I would never call him Gantz's helper, Nishi and Gantz are completely separate forces never get that confused.

I cant stress that fact enough Gantz may have some kind of respect for Nishi I'm guessing because hes lasted so long and is fairly decent for someone so young BUT that doesn't mean he'd do shit for Nishi. Keep in mind Gantz has also stopped calling Kurono bitch and has just been calling him Kurono.

    _____________________________________

Nishi's first role is Oku's exposition tool.

Nishi will hold information about Gantz but given his personality it wouldn't be weird that he'd hold vital information to the last moment.

Nishi is an example of how Gantz can morally bankrupt a person.

Thirteen is a very impressionable age, it wouldn't be to far a stretch to say 70% or more of the reason Nishi is the way he is is because of Gantz. In my mind I imagine him to be a few shades darker then Kurono when starting out.

Hes not the antagonist. He's not against Kurono or even Kato. Hes only against who he thinks will threaten his life or get in the way of what hes trying to do.

Nishi's first motivation was he wanted to get out of the Gantz game and live a normal life.

He's not concerned with building up a team for the impending doom, and he's not neglecting new people because he wants only the best.

Hes just sick of having to re-explaining what Gantz is to people who wont believe him. He also seems to get sickly turned on by seeing people die so he really could care less about them.

After being dead for 6 months his motivation does change; I'm guessing with the time of the catastrophe being even closer now in my mind he thought something like,

"Oh fuck freedom it its right around the corner I need to get my hands on some weapons."

He still neglects to tell them till its a week away so he doesn't care if his teammates cant handle it.

No; people who are nationalists see there country as an extension of themselves and what makes them great.

Izumi's Japanese and vain, if the better players of Gantz in Japan cant hold there own when the time comes it makes them look weak and hurts Izumi's ego.

Nishi's only concerned with himself so he doesn't care who gets the job done as long as he lives.

Nishi is basically a serial killer allowed to fulfill his fantasies without punishment.

A stereotype of serial killers is that, in their youth, they start 'small' by killing animals. Nishi is written doing this, as well as his entire class thinking of him a psychotic creep (obviously from similar behaviors in the past).

He's also remarkably similar in appearance and age to a similar young killer in Japan; the writer has made MANY references to real life and other media before.

On a different tangent, note Nishi shows almost NO interest in women at all, despite only being a few years younger than Kuruno and other horny teenage boys. You'd think a regular healthy teenage boy would be staring at all the bouncing breasts around him, but Nishi barely seems to notice and just wants to kill, kill, kill.

I'm still wondering why Nishi's motivations would change from leaving Gantz to using the 100 pts for a new powerful weapon, especially as he had one from the Italy hunt (though I doubt he would want to bring back a person who he would see as useless as they already managed to be killed in an earlier hunt).

I think, as a theory, it is to do with Nishi's ego, that before in the Tanaka hunt (as he did know about the Katastrophe back then, as it was referenced on the home page of his website) he figured he would be okay as he had survived previous hunts to get where he was (90 pts as of Tanaka hunt over an unknown number if hunts).

Dying brought him down a notch so he decided he needed to be more equipped when Katastrophe was going to hit.

What troubles me now, apart from this, is Izumi's history with the Vamps and Gantz, as we know now in Gantz Minus, Izumi and Nishi began in the same hunt (I believe it was the Tiger alien going from memory, feel free to correct), and with Izumi gone and Nishi staying, how come Nishi didnt recognise the Vamps when apparently it was Gantzers who attacked them and Izumi was recognised by HS?

Possibly because the vampires think Nishi is not a threat, so decides not hunt him. Remember the conversation between Nishi and Izumi on the train? Nishi seemed so surprised that he asked Izumi if the attack from the vampires occur all the time. This makes me speculate that Nishi has not been ambushed by the vampires, but the possibility of him meeting them in the past is plausible. Honestly, do you think Nishi could survive an ambush from vampires? He almost died fighting Japanese SWAT without invisibility.
etufo: HS is most likely going to die sooner or later. Who will kill the cool character killer?

Popo: well, obviously going by that logic, HS will have to kill himself...

Nishi, Kurono, and Izumi died in situations they could just as easily have survived. Sometimes it's just dumb luck.

i completely agree with your theory on gantz

it was developed by those men who intercepted word of an alien invasion. the gantz units were developed by a secret organization to develop strong members that could eventually stop the end of the world.

that much seems clear at this point

nishi though ... i believe he is just a psycho who was picked and is good at what he does. He obviously knew what was going to happen.

^ Not sure about people being picked in that way... Though picking from a varied populace does mean a hidden gem or two will be found, why not use living soldiers and train them up using available gear retro-fitted from the Gantz tech?

The scientists and engineers involved with constructing the Gantz units (a little sick of calling them balls now) based on the details passed to them obviously built the things to exact specs and the units filter from a list of the recently deceased in a specific radius from where they're placed (this info was presented in the Gantz manual).

My initial theory on the units construction came from that whoever built them had retro-built them when the messages from the old man's girl led to the GGG (Giant German Gantz) being built, which would, coincidentally(?) fit an Invader, and so copies were built to fit human "pilots" (as the manual refers to the seat within the unit as a cockpit, I'm terming ball guys as pilots).

This is important because in theory, a Gantz unit could be set up in a military base and as such trained individuals would have access to the gear, however it seems that the units were unchanged from spec (surely someone would have questioned the timer that appears when someone says "Katastrophe"? That would have to have been programmed in by someone!) and may not have been used as inventively as humanity could have used them, leading to the old man using them for high stakes betting.
Where funnily enough, higher-ups in government and royalty apparently are involved in the masquerade... surely someone could have bought the old man out for public interest within the theoretical 31 years it had been going on (based on the timer), especially with the Cold War happening?

Wow, a lot of immature folks on here.

Anyways, I doubt that Nishi knew much about Gantz other than how to use the weapons, the possibility of other teams and the 100 pt rewards. If he knew much more I'm sure Oku would've given him a 100 pt weapon to prove his worth as a veteran. Since that isn't the case, I'm convinced he's just been around long enough to see how the game is played in an effective manner. He simply lets the noobs do their thing and takes advantage of the fact that they take the attention off of him, allowing him to easily pull off alien kills.
