Katou irritates me. I saw him as a good foil for Kurono. The two sides of the coin. Both are fighting on the side of good, but Kurono showed that you don't have to be a putz while doing it. Katou hasn't got that yet, or maybe his balls just haven't dropped.

I think there is definately space for Katou to grow as a character. As Sid said, we've seen the hint of darkness within him. I think he needs something to come along and seriously brake him, just shatter his world. Then he can lose it for a while. That would be entertaining.

Katou = Big Body NARUTO. And trust me, I hate your typical shounen main character which like u mention KATOU screams. Plus i doubt he'll be the leader now that Kurono is back since a lot of these current followed Kurono. Kurono has saved them quite a lot of times so i doubt they'd turn on him.

And no, i dont think there's space for Katou to grow, he has been the same since the beginning, even death couldn't change him.

He's starting to kill aliens. He's starting to doubt himself when it comes to be selfless. This is only the beginning.

I just re-read Gantz and I must say he isn´t THAT bad.I actually don´t dislike him,I just think Kurono should stay the main character - but I also think it´s more interesting to have Katou how he is now,with his reluctant art of killing aliens and such.Of course he´s going to change and I think the Katou/Kurono duo will be badass....It has the potential at least^^

Okay, time for some maintenance. Despite the low post count, there's been a lot of sensible stuff being thrown around here. Personally, I have made my feelings on Katou clear (at least i hope), and I won't be going over posts that argue for Katou good/bad. It's up to you whether you hate him or not. The point behind this post is to summarize what i believe to be the "new issues" that were raised by various posters.

As a Gantzer I think Katou finally hit his stride in the Nuri mission. He was scared to death but still acted. After facing down Nuri the other aliens probably won't be as intimidating to him.

Whatever, I love both characters. Even though Kurono is more skilled and has more raw talent as a Gantzer, Katou was the man that killed 1000 Arms + Nuri, so enough said.

Doesn't seem like enough to me for him to actually become the centerpiece of the story again.
But then again, this is Gantz.
We may be heading towards a two/three leader set up with Kurono - Izumi - Katou each having an even slice of the action/story/character development... but GAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we won't find until at least ten chapters or so...

Ok, on second thought, that's a hell lot of loose ends, but well, you can't really make a good manga out of loose ends (well, you can, but i don't want that happening to gantz)

I think Katou is going to be putting effort into decoding what Nuri told him. Granted he asked the question to stall for time before Nuri ripped him limb from limb, but I think that he's going to keep the response to heart. Katou's kind of Michael J. Fox's character in "The Casualties of War". He's there to keep the team from becoming something like Osaka. I think Gantz was actually pretty cunning in sending them to Osaka. Somehow he knew that the Osakans would not defeat Nuri because they were basically a team of Izumis and Nishis. There are plenty room for Katou to grow. But the MOST important thing is he needs to get laid first off... then maybe his bro could like trip over his toys and die then Katou will be vengeful about his decision to bring kurono back instead of freeing himself. His character will definately venture into uncharted territory, and maybe going bald from depression in the process (Hot Damn! Can that hairline go any higher or what??).

The more I think about it these manga/Gantz characters are acting like cartoons were there is little character development. You can put Katou, Kurono and Nishi right back in the onion arc and they'd pretty much do and say the same things. Nishi would just stand around going "Hmmmmph". Katou would stand around with sweat beads roling off his forehead saying "Uuuughhh'. And Kurono would do something kickass.
I don't hate Katou but he's just one level above Inaba IMO. So much potential wasted...

Well, mangaka absolutely could develope them more over past... FEW YEARS! but he did not.
There is still potential, the aftermission period was always full of such things
