The Kurono Kei/Kei Kurono thing is from the Japanese name order - last name first, where the western way is forename first. Dark Horse do have problems translating names, like Pip Bernadotte in Hellsing.
To be fair I havent got v1 yet, but I do hope they keep up as I want all the series in legal english.
Got mine on Friday last week. I must have finished it in the first 15 minutes but it was worth it. I have to agree with some of the other posters, there were areas where I kind of felt like they screwed up, but all in all they did a good job. It also looks good on my book shelf.
I just read this asshole's critique upon the english Gantz version by DH, and you are all welcome to spam This brainless ass for writing bull about one of the greatest mangas ever.
The Comics Reporter - David P. Welsh on Gantz
And here's an interview with the DH editor of Gantz, some maybe find interesting to read through:
Dark Horse Comics - MICHAEL GOMBOS ON GANTZ
^ Everyone's entitled to their own opinions and all but... that's one dumb fuck ¬¬
That's the kind of thing that makes me mad when good works are available to all sorts of people, consdering some can't really appreciate it. Not "mature" enough? All gore? Perchance that person missed the first pages in which someone risks his own life to save a homeless guy, other someone, who doesn't really care, is moved by having someone who didn't think him useless remember him... meh. "Why, oh, why?!"
^Well, it's what I call the starting out Gantz syndrome. Many people including me, just skimmed through the comic for the first one or two missions without thinking much. Then the third mission puts everything into perspective and just puts a hook on the reader.
@2nd Morten Link.
The dude says that Gantz anime is on par with the manga. What a load of bullshit.
^ "Gantz is one of a few properties where I feel like the anime and the manga are on par with each other, in terms of what they have to offer. That is, I don't feel like people are missing out by only seeing/reading one" that plus this: "Gantz is about a mix of typical people--male and female, young and old, students and businessmen--who, without leaving modern-day Tokyo. Without even leaving an ordinary apartment they find themselves suddenly under the total control of a black, floating sphere named Gantz, that supplies them with weapons and orders them to go out and kill targets at its command." makes me wonder if that guy really knows what he's on about. *sigh*
Well, anyway if the overall quality is not only acceptable but good, then it's all fine, right? (I can't really post here, since I have no licensed copy of Gantz nor am I likely to have it)
I guess this sez' all about him... Seriously, he made a critique about the whole manga based only on the first volume? I say epic fail... I hope he doesn't get payed...David P. Welsh has loved comics since his parents first used Archie and Casper to sedate him during long trips in the family station wagon.
@Popo: I wasn't happy with his notes, too. It seems he only watched the anime, and isn't really a guy whose 100% behind this project. But meh, you can't demand some pubishers editor to follow the good scans/translations of the hawks/shocwave/illuminati etc ... but he sure should acknowledge the differences between anime and manga before talking bs like that....
^These two articles are symptomatic of everything wrong with the "french" approach to writing, i.e. Making up in style what you like in substance and/or delivering what you think is most generally acceptable, than what you think is correct.
On one hand, we have a wannabe article writer who's more concerned with making a Manga fit within his line of argument, than building his argument based on the Manga.
Note the three paragraphs of pseudo-philosophical musing. Musing, because it's based on his opinion, and pseudo-philosophical in that, while it attempts to obtain some insight on the nature of mankind, because it's based on self-fabricated nonsense rather than fact, ends up being pure bullshit.
Adult-Oriented Graphic Novels featuring Zero/Fucked up Plot Copious Gore/Bloodletting and Explicit/Semi-Explicit Sexual content has always been a feature of the American Industry, and it's something that has been around for years. On one hand, he didn't invent anything, and on the other he obviously didn't think twice before applying to Manga.
Also, a sad lack of imagination/ looking beyond the immediate frame, as Cali pointed out. Probably the kind of guy who read Battle Royale, and write "a manga that's refreshingly gore" and completely overlook the enquiry into, among other things, how truly friendly we are to each other, as teenagers.
On the other hand we have someone who delivers the information he thinks everyone wants to hear, rather than what is.
We will note here the extensive use of collateral examples, a recurrent device used to writers in a attempt to hide the fact that they know little to nothing about the subject matter they are dealing with. In this case, it is interesting to note that this Manga/Anime are equal observation appears in a context where the Anime has been "legally" available to westerners for years now, and the concern of people returning to it based on that will be whether, the manga pars with the anime, and whether it is different enough to justify the getting the manga after watching the anime. Since the average anime viewer finds it hard to believe that mangas can be better than anime, you'll also note how he says "berserk is my own opinion"/"Samurai Champloo is a rule" (of course, it's the exception, not the rule/ and says that "Gantz is equal" which he thinks is probably more acceptable to the average manga reader than saying, "it's that much better, the anime is a lot like the game - a carbon copy except for a new closing chapter and some minor details, all of which only have a 'what if' value when compared to the main story."
I finally got it, some comic store in Holland actually imported it .
It's great, the translation really catches the sarcastic, arrogant tone of Kurono.
There were some flaws, but none major.
That reviewer is a total idiot, he pretty much only compared it to other manga (with stereotypes). Without looking at what Gantz has to offer. Even though I do think Dark horse wasn't clever to put a naked Kishimoto on the back cover, which would make it sell less good imo.
Can't wait for v2.
