Whether he died in the Osaka mission or not is irrelevant. Anyone else think Sakata will be back? I would like to know more about the psychic abilities, and I doubt Cherry will be able to explain it as well as his sensei.
Yes

after what he said and since oku is not really the type of mangaka that brings the story to some unexpected developments. i think he will die and never come back.
well i still hope he doesnt die but i'm sure thats going to happen anyways.
My new signature to celebrate my 1000th post!!! (My waifu Yuno)
I don't think he'll be back. We might get more chapters devoted to Cherry (and maybe Tonkotsu :P) so that the psychic stuff is explained more.
i DO think he'll be back. even tho its against his wishes. or so he says.
I wish he'd be back, but I doubt it
Sakata had a death wish since the Oni mission.
It would be "cheap" to bring him back.
Agreed - everything, especially what he has said himself (his degenerating organs as well), seems to point to the fact that he isn't coming back. That said - there is nothing of the sort mentioned in the manga, but looking at Cherry, it's seems very likely that Sakata has even more guilt issues than Cherry... again, this is just an impression - i'd have to reread gantz to give you something more constructive, and I feel too lazy right now... that said, I think Sakata should go, for the same reason I think Katou had to go, in the Buddha arc, and then Kurono/Izumi end of phase 1 - eliminating strong/charismatic characters provides more room for other minor (and arguably more interesting characters) to grow. It's kind of hard to see Katou doing anything in the Osaka Arc if Kurono and Izumi were still around, except maybe the odd rescue, but with them gone, Leadership falls on him completely. Same for Sakata - with the old man gone, the entire focus for psychic abilities falls on Cherry - we can reasonably expect to see about twice more of him here on out...
Somewhat off-topic - If you have played Fate/Stay Night (the game) and read the Manga, then You should probably see the how strongly Sakata/Cherry mirror Kiritsugu/Emiya shirou... actually, Cherry looks a hell lot like Shirou(Image:UBW.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), acts a lot like him (minus the loser, suicidal part) and Kiritsugu's embittered-self resulting from his failure to become a Friend/Hero of Justice reminds me a lot of Sakata... but then again, if you haven't played the game, and haven't read the manga, it's probably hard to follow...
And before anyone pops up and asks wth would that game have had any impact on Gantz, well Fate/Stay Night has busted the 5 million sales line in Japan
I would like Sakata to come back, but this is different from me reckoning he will be back. I would like to see him again because when he first goes into the Gantz room back in the Katsupe (the correct symbols of the Kappe) hunt, he says something about seeing "that ball" somewhere before but he cant remember. That seems interesting to me and seems to be most likely if he did that he was a 100 pointer like Izumi, which may explain why he has the inexplicable bad nickname (Gantz favouritism again...).
