Default The Poem at the tankoubon

OK... I'm collecting all the GANTZ tankoubon... and at every cover(the inside cover), there is a poem written.
    here what it says;

    "Before the world
    was created,
    the Word already existed.
    The Word was
    the source of life,
and the life brought the light
    to mankind.
    The like shines
    in the darkness,
    and the darkness
    has never put it out."

I'm not very confident with my english, so I'd like to discuss the meaning of this poem...
maybe there is some clues for this manga in the poem.

I had to fixed it, you made some mistakes in writing...
Of course it reminds of the bible beginning (though that part of the bible is even older and was some remain from an older babylon text). And somehow even the believings of the black sun, which are even older.

But let's just guess the word = Gantz. Then was Gantz the source of life? So mankind is light and the aliens are the darkness?

Btw, was that text ever discussed before? I have to look for older threads...

I thought those were just passages from the bible. Of course I don't remember all of the stuff that was in it from my Christianity days, so I'm probably wrong.

does oku right it out in english, or was that translated? If he writes it out in english, then it might just be a ploy to make his manga seem cooler or more mysterious.

It is similar to the beginning of the book of John, which is one of the gospels. He does write it in english, and Im pretty sure this has been discussed before. But it is a cool way to start off the books. It might be related to the german black ball cult. Many cults take the bible out of context to get their meaning, so I wouldn't be suprised if the black ball worship was related somewhat to the bible.

The black could also be the gantzers, and the light could be the aliens, bringing destruction to the evilness of mankind. numerous times Oku gives us pessimistic representations of human nature, mostly in the beginning of the series. I wonder if his direction has changed since then. Compassion was given to the aliens all up to the dino mission, where they start to become menacing. i.e Onion alien's father status, Tanaka alien's protection of their babies (the little birds), and the buddha's speech when he asked why they were hunting them and they hadn't done anything wrong, and the shorty's comradery. The aliens currently seem more untamed and menacing than previous aliens. The first time an innocent was killed was in the dino mission, where Oku's direction may have changed.

Interesting, I thought that was from the first book of Genesis... But I can't find any descent christian motives in the story, though there are o/c a lot of buddism references (not only the aliens) like resurrection after death and stuff...

I doubt that the Gantzers are on the black side and the aliens are the light, it must be converse. Of course, the black ball and the suits refer to be on the black side, but somehow I don't think that's the reason beind that. Gantz must be some kind of Earth protection system, made by man or god, that's the question. And Nishi said on his homepage that it's an alien invasion, so I don't think the aliens of the beginning were friendly and harmless. Well, I hope if there ever will be a conclusion, it's not as fucked up as evangelion.

    I agree...
When a japanese (i mean usually someone who don't know anything about Christianity) put this type of things into his manga/anime the goal is only to make the manga more "cool".
Not saying that that poem means nothing or have nothing to do with the gantz story but that that is the way the japanese authors trying to make their story more "strange" or "epic"...

Yes maybe Nishi's website said that it was an alien invasion, and to the humans it sure seems that way but it the aliens view it may just be illegal immigration. It is all perspective.

Anyway i am starting to think that Nishi knows a lot about competing in Gantz but nothing about the motivations of gantz.

    1. He made a website with detailed information about gantz, it is likely that everything he knows about it is on that site.

    2. I can't think of a scenario where gantz is suddenly going to start explaining things to the gantzers. The only thing that they ever learned from gantz so far was by asking him, about the 100 points menu and stuff, but these guys are so stupid: they never ask him a damn thing, they don't explore the room after competition and they don't wait around to see what happens to gantz between missions. They are the biggest bunch of sheep and it is a HUGE plot hole. The least that Oku could do is a scene where some guy survives a mission and waits around get his head blown up for annoying gantz or something!

^Well, Kurono once visited Gantz's appartment, but he couldn't get in.

But yeah, it is kinda stupid that they're not asking Gantz more stuff. Not that I think he'd answer anyway.
