I'm by means no Kurono fan (not a fan of main characters in general) but I have to say that he's had my favorite character arc in just about anything I've read. I thought he was a vile, self-absorbed asshole up until around the time of Izumi's killing spree, but since he's turned into a respectable hero.
The problem is now that Kurono has made this transition I feel his story is over. Now Katou needs to find his killer instinct like Kurono had to find his humanity. I'm sure that's what the second phase is going to be about. Then maybe Sakata will take over. Or maybe Oku will do something even stranger and make Inaba into a respectable character. |

^Assuming Sakata and Inaba live long enough. My guess is there is going to be a lot of casualties for Tokyo team. Oku might just kill off a lot of people and replace them with old vets like Izumi.

I think that the big difference with Gantz as a show is that Kurono is one of the few interesting main characters. A lot of the SJ series (bleach, one piece, naruto) all have extremely one dimensional main characters that continue to push the theme of the show. In Gantz we actually get to see main character development. Kurono changes from a loser to a winner (and changes back with the memory loss), unlike the other shows that have winners that always win.

^Yeah, but it always the same reason he starts winning. Some imaginary cheavenistic ideal that he has to save everyone somehow magically gives him super special skills. I like Bleach, but it really gets repetitive.
Kurono however fights the way he does based on his development of his character. The first mission, he gets pissed that the onion alien "kills" Katou. The second, he fights because he is scared to death. The third, because he likes the adrenaline. The fourth, still scared but because he is alone. Fifth, to save the others as Katou would. The sixth, as a leader, and then to rescue Tae. The Seventh to revive his old friends. i don't know if that helps any but it shows how much more depth his "fighting" is. Rather than release a whole bunch of superpowers based on one reason, Kurono's reason changes with each mission.

I don't think Kurono was stupid, he just didn't think about the reprecussions of his freedom. He just wanted out of the meat grinder that is Gantz and that's understandable.
It's like if someone's house is on fire they're not going to think about the consequences of leaving, they'll just want to get out of the house. I guess from Kurono's perspective any price to pay for his freedom would be worth it. Or maybe it was just poor writing on Oku's part. |
