You don't even have partners in crime in Nocturne... only little demons... You'll take on the first boss with a Pixie, an amalgam of paper straps, and a gooee piece of slime... and they (every other recruitable demon in the game as well) cannot rez you if you die... hence the game over... Umm, snes you said? I'll try looking it up. BTW, Kaguzuchi, the end boss, is modelled exactly after GOD, so if you feel like killing him again... lol.
Still, despite the many times I almost smashed my controller out of frustration, after a few hours of gaming, it becomes very addictive. Probably why I don't like FF anymore - Too easy to break the game and rape everything that moves.
I guess that's what they call the "Thrill of Death". No point in playing an RPGif there is only a <1% to see the game over screen. I finished Grandia III without anyone in my party ever dying... was very unhappy, and not because of the cheesy ending cinematics
O.o... I guess that makes me the Osaka kind of Gantzer... o.O

Well, what do you know, I actually said something abou Gantz. This off-topic thread isn't so off-topic after all...

LIEZ!!!
Well yeah though whats the rules for having demons out? I ask because the first two(snes) has 2 forms of currency, the regular money the humans barter with and this megatan stuff, that allows you to summon your demons and is necessary in order to keep them out. So the stronger, and better the demon the more it cost per turn to keep them out. Also since there are three endings to the game based on what your alignment is kinda makes playign the game over or at least saving before important choices a bit more interesting game wise. Not sure how they did it in nocturn, but I do know that I can only hope to find these games on the internet now. Atlus tends to make a limited amount of said games, keeping their prices high for a loong time(if you can find digital devil saga it's still around 47 dollars where im at)

Ummm, Nocturne features five (plus one hidden) endings. They are no longer alignment, but choice dependent... i.e. there are a number of critical, and minor choices, that affect the endings. The minor choices only come into play if you have made two critical choices that would send you on two different ending routes.
The monster system has been changed... you recruit them by talking with them, and "bribing" them with stuff... sometimes they ask questions too. Or you can get them by making them beg for mercy (when they are almost dead) or using unique monster skills. Mostly, though, you'll recruit heavily during the first few hours of the game, then get what you need by inter-fusing monsters, resummoning old monsters viz the compendium system and recombining them between each other. You can basically summon every single monster in the game (assuming you have the minimum level requirement) with a base of ten monsters.
The actual summoning uses money, and recruiting can take money/items, but once they are yours, they are yours. The difficulty has been upped from the snes games though, so you are not that much better off than before. Also, for about half of the game, you'll always be on tight budget, so its a close thing, always.
The stat growth is one point per level and the damage/life difference this makes is measured, at best, in 8-9 points per point. This is even worse with Demons - they randomize their stat growth, and so are generally not worth keeping once they have learned all their skills (sometimes the last skill is shit as well, so you may want to ditch them before then). Your party will evolve perpetually.
One more thing worth saying, is that your main character can only learn a maximum of eight skills. You have to unlearn old skills to get more, and once you do... you find out they are gone forever... so you also have to plan your character build ahead of time, and choose your demons in a way that complements your style. You won't get anywhere w/o a balanced team.

hahaha yup sounds about the same for the first two games. You got your demons either by bribing, saying the right thing, or threatening. Same thing with the combining only sometimes they changed into a completely different demon when you combined them. Then there were some of the negative effects from combining two completely different aligned demons, like combining a law demon with a chaos demon might give them completely rape skills but make everything else about them piss poor or vice versa, depending on what each others stats were. If memory serves the monsters dont gain levels so pretty much combining is your major source of making sure your monsters stay on top if you use them at all(for the first 4-10 hours, depending on how long it takes you to do all the opther random thigns, you will quite literally have youre friends be some of your strongesty allies due to the fact that depending on how you level them depends on how useful they are), as youre friends have the magic you have the demons, kinda a fair trade, but yeah when youre in battle and you summon a demon that needs only 20 megatama to be summoned but requires about 1k+ megatama to be in your party for every subsequent turn, you tend to lose them fairly fast/use them for the emergency boss battles.(k im embellishing that amount but hell some of their prices are a bit outrageous for their power) and it doesnt help that you only get megatama from fighting regular monsters/gifts from monsters you have captured(yes you can get gifts from the same type of monster you captured, if they arnt complete dicks) but the random target system kinda makes getting rid of that one pesky demon out of 9 of them(yes I had a fight of 9 very horribly overpowered demons once) a chance of luck more than anything as just selecting the type of monster on screen you target is the msot control youhave, wether all characters attack the same target in that monster type or not is random so fights can get a bit tense.

point is atlus loves making me weep.
