Unlike what was said earlier, I don't think that Kurono choosing to be free was out of character. From my impression he was a person who had lost himself in cynicism and jadedness towards life. He went through enough hell, in turn liking and hating it until he found himself completely alone, but still he managed to survive and when they finally came back from the mission and he had enough points, and he felt as if he had done everything he could and succeeded where there had been no chance whatsoever, I think hope appeared before him again.
I think him choosing freedom, and the point of his death afterwards, is to force on the readers the subtle undercurrent that you cannot escape Gantz once involved. We all saw Kei and his obsession to return. Likewise, after Kurono left, he went through the similar questionable period of wondering what he had lost and forgotten.
I personally like Option 3 a lot. Gaining 100 points is a huge achievement. The thing about the Gantz missions is that it's never predictable. No matter what, every time they go in, regardless of whether they think they have what it takes, they end up getting annihilated on some level or another. Every time it's a life and death struggle and being able to bring someone back from the memory kind of opens up a third dimension to the entire aspect of the Gantz affair.
1. Improve your chances of getting more points
2. Break you shackles and go free, escape!
3. Bring back 1 person.
Option 3 is nearly ridiculously redundant when one considers the rate of death for even experienced Gantz participants. We've seen time and time again how a team goes in ready for anything, only to be utterly blown away... There's no assurance of a tomorrow no matter how carefully one plans.
That being taken into consideration... WHY the devil would anyone choose option 3? It does not improve your chances. It does not get you out. And considering the huge vast overwhelming odds one must go against to gain 100 points, it's not entirely unreasonable to think that Gantz is playing a cruel and twisted joke by offering the option to begin with.
Anyone who selects option 3 is not gaining a thing. Life is cheap in Gantz and if you value your own life you either protect it or escape.
I think Option 3 adds an entirely excellent level of play to the Gantz game. I like it.
