Izumi's character

As you can tell I'm new to the forums, although I've already made a couple of posts. However I've read Gantz from the start and am current on the manga. One thing I've noticed while searching the forums is the air of ambiguity surrounding Izumi's character. While reading, I was thinking about the introduction of Izumi, and the development of his mentality as the story unfolds. Now as far as I can tell, and we all have read/ seen, Izumi was once stuck in Gantz but had managed to achieve 100 points. Now when he did that I believe he chose freedom. Why? Because if you look at his character and his interaction with Kurono you begin to notice a couple of things, like when Izumi first brought up Gantz, the bomb was giving off a warning inside Kurono's head. And what seems clear by now is that those bombs give off a warning when someone who has no idea about Gantz is about to be told what it is by someone who is currently experiencing 'Gantz.' And remember, when Izumi met Kurono he only inquired about Gantz through the loose association of the fight he had gone through. Also, Izumi, in particular when he has that interciew, states that his excellent marks/ grades, prowess with sports, and even his physical beauty are all irrelevant, and that for a matter of implication, he feels empty inside like something's missing. And so, the further he digs into Kurono's life( and surfs the net) the closer he comes to finding out about Gantz, then eventually does-through a slight intervention of Gantz itself. Then as he experiences Gantz he realizes that's what he truly longed for all along.
And as for the reason he has so much contempt for Kurono, I think its because for once, there's somebody who's better at something than him, and he resents that. Even his small fascination with Tae stems from the fact that she likes someone other than him, and in turn coincidently the one she likes is Kurono. So I think when you look at it that way, its easy to understand the kind of character Izumi is, and why is development seems so static now that he's so active in Gantz. Also I apologize if this seems like an absurdly lengthy post. :P

Izumi is Keis opposite after he met Tae. Before, he was like Izumi, remeber before the Buddha Massacre he was happy when he was going into Gantz, because he had nothing to live for. Now he has a reson to live, to get 100 points and revive Tae. Izumi loves battle because it makes him feel alive.

I agree with you on some parts, but I don't think he chose freedom.
When Izumi was first introduced I thought that he was a substitute for Kato, but as you progressed into the story, he turns out to be the total opposite. I suspect that theres a possibility that he didn't choose freedom not based on his character but instead Gantz. I think that when Izumi was in Gantz for the first time, he felt that he could only choose freedom but maybe as he kept playing Gantz he noticed that he started liking it more and more. Back then, as you can see there are 3(I think not to mention Nishi) more people in that room with Izumi that were obviously survivors, maybe since Gantz wasn't so desperate for people back then, he only gave them one choice. Aside from that now that he's back in Gantz I think he's gone off the deep end and doesn't care about anything except Gantz. Plus, like you said, Kurono's better than him and that's why he's so determined to surpass him. Oh yeah, Hurray for my first post, heh. |

Yeah I would agree with you there news. As far as one can tell, Izumi was probably not aware of the options, being as Gantz probably doesn't make the choices aware even after you win( although it is possible) which would explain Izumi's lack of fullfilment.

Izumi is a psychotic mass murderer. I think he killed 300+ people just for fun. I like this charater because he seems to have no regret or conscience. It doesnt affect him if he kills a lot of people. He is ruthless with killing on his mind which I like. He is perfect has good grades, good in sports and good looking the total opposite of Kurono who is a lazy ( daytime Lantern ).
Overall, I like this character because he is a ruthless killer !! Damn the creator of GANTZ is a genius I salute YOU !!! |

Izumi is a lot like Kiriyama from Battle Royale...almost identicle, actually.
I suspect that Nishi and Izumi knew each other. Perhaps Nishi was trying to emulate Izumi in his psychotic behavior. |
