I disagree with the necessity of an american studio to do the movie. I think Japan could pull it off quite nicely. I'm not particularly fond of some recent adaptations, which makes me lose faith in any possibility of that sort for Gantz.

I like that Izumi and Nishi prequel idea. I also agree the film would be better made by Japan, but I would like to go a cinema and watch Gantz on the big screen over here, so it'd have to be a UK or US made for that. It'd be an 18 film over here anyways. As for a US certificate, youre not looking much different than the highest cert the anime dvds got (I dont know about US certificates, though I do know the rules for gaining UK certificates).
I wasn't very sure if Gantz would work as an action flick but after watching the last Terminator salvation trailer I've changed my mind:

this is what a Gantz movie should look like intense, with good special effects but not relying too much on CGI and with decent actors...guess it will never happen though...

I think it would work but it needs a good director ofcourse.
And people expect an ending and the manga hasn't ended yet. Unless the ending is that the main character reaches 100 points.
Not really sure if they should follow the manga plot.
Maybe make up their own plot with other people. There are a lot of Gantz teams afterall.
Gantz....
^If a prequel movie were made, it could show new details on the catastrophe and Izumi's team, and end with him getting the 100 points and going free. Then it could have an "after the credits" scene with him transferring into Kurono's school...
And were the manga to end without answers, the prequel could have different info on it, I think that'd work out fine, and avoid getting the fans turbulence about a loyal adaptation to the main plotline or an alternative that some would hate and some would love.

YES, Technology allows it, both gore and animated aliens.
NO, Gantz is way too long for a movie, needs to be series...
It'll be too expensive to make it look good in a series. If a movie be made, it should base it off sub-characters and their plots. Maybe show tokyo team near the end. E.g. random people in different countries that enter Gantz in its last few stages...
ps. additional extracts like Izumi's death, Nishi's spree, Kurono's last stand against vampires, Kato's death could be made separately as DVD extras. xD

It could happen if you look at it this way:
make it like a trilogy, much like lord of the rings if you like each movie about 3 hours and you can easely put those 300 chapters together. The small little emissions can be dealt with easily and the time lag between the big ones can be done in separate movies the last one having last big one. If you think about a trilogy could make this one of the best sci trilogies out there if the effort is there. THe most important part though is not to have it made by japanise people with japanise people. Have a big budget, the right actors and directors and your in for a some fun!
Speaking about trilogies i had a 4 hour discussion with a friend about Berserk can be made into a trilogy, we event went as far as picking the artists and time lines.
^ Ugh
I think on the prequel idea, based on theory and things shown on Nishi's webpage, a film following Izumi is a good option, starting on late 200X-2 when, about 14 years old, he first joins, later him meeting HS (I still say he met him in a Vampire Seijin Hunt and that Izumi lost his points there, the Tae hunt comments can be explained away by his memory wipe). HS and any other Vampire survivor (such as his original gang from the Kappe hunt) would swear revenge one day against Izumi. They'd also get their hands on a Controller and a Suit from a dead hunter "to research their enemy, Gantz".
It all leads up to the Jeans Alien hunt on November 200X-1 where he gets his 100 alongside those flashback guys and a 13 year old newb called Nishi.
There would be a total of 3 hunts, one being the Vamp hunt and the last Jeans Alien hunt for the action.
